I didn’t take many photos on this one.

Originally there was a 300 mm tall plinth that needed to be removed so we could get a hearth in level.

There was also some corrugated metal sheet closing off the chimney which once removed allowed us to carry out a camera inspection.

We fitted a single slab piece of slate, cement rendered the back wall patched the brickwork and fabricated a heat shield to protect the beam from the pipe of the stove.

I almost forgot the beam originally was set structurally into the wall. We removed the beam fit a prestressed concrete lintel behind it cleaned up the beam and re-fitted it.

We fitted a 30 year flex liner.

And installed a Saltburn 5 kW multi fuel stove.

We then carried out a full commissioning of the Stove with care and best use instructions for the Customer

When carrying out the survey it was obvious the liner had never been sealed properly large amounts of vermiculite poured out of the chimney cavity every time the stove was touched and had done so for some time.

The herringbone brickwork on the back, was full bricks and had seriously impacted the amount of physical space we had into the chimney. To get round this, we remove a section of the herringbone brickwork. Remove the old liner carried out a camera inspection, inserted a new liner, then repaired the herringbone brickwork allowing for the space to fit a fixed 45° bend.

Once the stove was reinstalled, there was just enough combustible distance from the top of the Stove to the beam so the addition of a heat shield to protect the beam from the flue pipe was the final job to be tackled to bring the installation in line with current building regulations. Our heat shields consists of a 12 mm sheet of Fireboard with 12 mm spacing and air gaps around it, sitting into a 1.5 mm piece of folded galvanised sheet sprayed black.

When customers wish to keep old beams so long as the stove allows, this is the least impactful way to do it that I’ve come up with so far.

As there was no chimney pot present, we also fitted a new cream/buff chimney pot and repaired the capping.

The liner was a 30 year flex liner

The appliance was an old 100 stove

As always, we then carried out a full commissioning of the stove and talked about care and best use with the customer.

This was an installation some time ago now as I’m behind with my updates.

We removed the old twin wall, which was a bit short and smoking badly into the room. There was also expanding foam that had been used in multiple places that had clearly been on fire which also needed to be dealt with. The system was removed in its entirety a new closure plate fabricated and a new Flue system installed with a anti-downdraught cowl and all combustibles removed or distanced appropriately.

The twin system we used was DTW 30 year twin wall chimney.

We reinstalled a pickering-eco.

We then carried out a full commissioning of the Stove lit and tested it and talked about care and best use with the customer .

It’s been some time since I’ve posted on Facebook although we’ve been busy. I’ve also had some enforced time off as I broke my elbow over the summer months, that being said i’m on my way to a full recovery and have plenty of jobs yet to update.

This particular job, the chimney breast was a little narrow to accept a rather unusual metal surround .
As such, we extended the chimney breast by around and 125mm to both sides remove the masonry from within the chimney and the gas liner and carried out a camera inspection.

We expose the bricks on the back wall then at the customers request did some retro 60 concrete sculptural rendering which unfortunately hasn’t been picked up by the camera. By that I mean quite sculptural something you might expect to see on a wall around York University.

We used a single slab piece of slate with polished edges and stone sealer applied.

Then installed the mighty &CountryFires Pickering-eco.

Due to the shortness of the chimney, we fitted a . A Flue Cube is an anti-downdraught cowl which also helps increase the flow rate of the chimney due to its unique design.

I will try and do more regular posts to showcase our work.

For anyone who follows or cares to scroll back through the previous jobs, this one should jog some memories.

After having the chimney swept by last year, they flagged up problems with the flex liner and recommended us to pop out and take a look.

When we removed the old liner and sent the camera up the chimney we found a litany of problems so much so that the customer decided to see how they got on that winter without the stove and have a think about whether they wish to move forwards with the work.

One winter without the stove was enough for the customers to feel they wanted us to tackle the work and get the stove up and running safely.

We fabricated a new closure plate and removed the wood shelf which was in breach of combustibles and cleaned and repointed the bricks behind the stove.

The upstairs bedroom is where the majority of the issues were uncovered. We removed the pine beam set structurally into the wall which penetrated into the working part of the chimney replacing it with a prestressed concrete lintel, bricked over the exposed floor joist within the chimney cavity, filled in a large hole further up the chimney just visible from within the bedroom and used high-density concrete blocks to separate off the bedroom and living room chimneys, once all of these issues had been rectified in the bedroom, the cast-iron fireplace was fitted back in place as if we'd never been.

We also carried out some minor re-pointing in the loft area and re-capped the chimney as the existing capping was poor and allowing water ingress.

Once all these critical issues were sorted we lined the chimney with a W3G Lifetime warranty liner. This flex liner is currently the most resilient on the market however it's always worth bearing in mind no matter the quality of the liner, regular maintenance, i.e. chimney, sweeping once or twice yearly and burning the correct fuels is critical to maintain warranties and for the future health of the stove and liner. It's also worth bearing in mind as well as the yearly sweeping the chimney sweep must be qualified and registered or else your house insurance maybe void along with any warranties related to the stove and liner.

The stove was a Highlander, 5. Initially, the customers had expressed an interest in selling the stove, but had decided to hang onto it until after the winter.

This installation was a little more straightforward compared to some,

Prior to the work commencing we had a pre-installation sweep (sweep followed by a camera inspection) carried out by Ollie at Soot & Bristles, to ensure the chimney was in a suitable condition without remedial work to accept a metal liner.

The customer purchased the stove themselves and we completed the building alterations, flue lining and stove fitting.

We created an opening around 1000 mm², lined the opening in class one rated fireboard and fitted a Geo-cast simulated oak beam along with a single slab piece of slate for the hearth . We then lined the chimney with a 10m 30 year flex liner and fitted the stove.

We fitted a CO detector commissioned and tested the stove and talked to the customer through care and best use.

All in all it came together very nicely.

This installation was for a lady who was finding the open fire a little difficult as the ash had to be cleaned out from underneath the cast-iron hearth and needed regularly tending to to keep it going. She was hoping for as little building alterations as possible to reduce the disruption.

The perfect solution for this was the Rosedale inset with the flat door.

As the lady had just had the chimney swept by her local sweep, we incorporated a camera inspection prior to starting the building work to ensure the chimney was in a suitable condition without additional remedial work to except a metal liner.

We removed the fire back, altered the brickwork to create a flat front to both sides, concreted in the ash pit area and tiled the top and sides with split faced slate, fixing it in place with flexible tile adhesive.

We then lined the chimney with a 30 year flex liner and installed the Town & Country fires Rosedale inset.

as always, once the work was complete, we lit and tested the stove, talked her through care and best use of the appliance and fitted a CO detector.

Something that makes the job so much more worthwhile was later on that evening getting a message from the customer thanking us for doing such a lovely job and for making her warmer than she had ever been in that room.

With this installation, we combined two different chimney systems going from a flexible liner from the stove up into the loft, then transitioning to twin wall insulated chimney to pass through the roof and stands just over 800 mm above ridge height.

Prior to the new line of being installed, we carried out a camera inspection of the chimney to ensure it was in a suitable condition without further remedial work to accept a metal liner.

We constructed metal stud work in the loft and clad it using class one rated Fireboard integrating aninspection hatch.

Before reinstating the stove and connecting it to the chimney system, we also fabricated a heat shield to protect the existing oak beam.

Disappointingly, I didn’t take a picture of the Stove whilst doing the commissioning but the chimney system itself was an interesting build so I thought it worth posting.

Being a barn conversion, there was no masonry chimney original to the property.

As such, we constructed a , 5m twin wall insulated chimney system.

The customers had a custom-made concrete corner hearth fitted prior to the installation.

we installed a Morso, 7443 cylinder Stove. With a 5m twin wall insulated chimney system.

As this was newly converted, we also fitted a Lookryt 80 mm diameter external core vent.

We then lit and tested the stove and carried out a full commissioning.

This installation was reasonably straightforward. The existing oak beam required heat shielding as you should be able to see in the photo and the customers wished for a new hearth. For this we used a large single slab piece of slate.

The hearth was a little tricky to cut as the walls were curved which needed to be mirrored in the curvature of the slate. Measure twice cut once it all went very nicely in the end as I hope you will agree.

We installed a &CountryFires, Pickering-eco and lined the chimney with a 30 year flex liner.

With this installation, the Stone surround was already existing as was the Stovax Huntingdon 35 Stove.

The chimney was unlined and had been causing smoke to vent into one of the upstairs rooms.

The initial camera inspection was not possible as the chimney was completely full of birds nests. Once the bird’s nests have been cleared we found two bricks missing just above a sweeping access in the loft, this was an original feature to the property but not in line with current building regulations, when the outer chimney was swept, the ash would drop down to the door below servicing the second chimney and allowing for a quicker maintenance back in the day.

Prior to the lining this access point to the second chimney was blocked off.

Some vermiculite red panels had originally been fitted around the opening. These are unfortunately susceptible to moisture and had perished, once we removed these panels we found there was no supporting masonry to the left and the right resulting in the brick arch being unsupported. In one of the photos you should be able to see the new block work to the left and the right. We then lined the opening with cast-iron reeded panels sprayed black.

Once the chimney was lined, we reinstalled the appliance and carried out a full commissioning.
