11 September - A date that makes you stop and reflect for a moment.
A date that makes you think, simply, where was I?
There are certain moments in history that divide the world into before and after. The World Wars, the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and then 11 September 2001.
Twenty-five years ago today, the world changed.
We remember those who lost their lives, but also those who bravely ran towards the danger to save others. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage.
Our gate reminds us of a motto of grandfathers and their area of the Royal Navy:
“Where the Fleet Goes, We’ve Been.” - A simple phrase, but one that says a great deal about duty, courage and being prepared to go where you are needed.
And yet this morning, standing here, everything feels wonderfully peaceful.
Dew on the grass, mist over the fields, the sun slowly appearing… and actual green, green grass. After the summer we’ve had, that’s almost historic in itself.
It makes you wonder what this land has witnessed over the centuries. Wars, celebrations, hardship and peace, while generations simply carried on with ordinary life.
The world changes. Sometimes dramatically.
But the sun still rises, the mist lifts and the grass keeps growing.
Perhaps that’s something worth appreciating and reflecting on a little more today.
