Also included as part of the scheme is an 88-room aparthotel and 153 new apartments, with both set to run by sustainable operator Beyond. An additional 25,000 sq ft of new Grade A Office space would complete the scheme.

It has been estimated that the development could generate more than £315m for the region's economy over 30 years, as well as creating 625 jobs and providing a new addition to the city's cultural offer.

Architects' Vincent & Brown had remodelled the plans, which now comprise two distinct buildings designed to showcase the Roman attraction and breathe new life into Rougier Street.

The EBORACUM museum would celebrate the city's early Roman past and boost the city's visitor economy, as well as providing educational benefits. The new attraction would be more than twice the size of the JORVIK Viking Centre.

The plans include a two-year archaeological dig, which would be streamed across the world and will give the opportunity for every school child in York to take part.

There was also a discussion at the meeting about the archaeological dig, with councillors asking, what would happen if little of historical value was unearthed?

There’s good existing archaeological evidence about the nature of the site, which is next to a Roman road.

On the other hand, if they found bumper treasures, archaeologists could essentially work overtime to complete the work in the allotted time.

The Eboracum Roman museum, following a major archaeological dig on the site, could eventually attract more than 800K visitors each year. We are taking a “50-year view” of the development, and not trying to turn a quick profit. York Archaeological Trust will be the long-term tenant.

The final decision was a close-run thing – the City of York Council planning committee voted 6-5 in favour of the development on Wednesday night.

Ambitious plans for a new Roman Quarter in York may finally be approved by councillors this week.

A decision on whether to approve the scheme was adjourned mid-way through a meeting of the City of York Planning Committee due to news of the death of Queen Elizabeth. The proposal returns to planning committee A at 4.30pm on Wednesday 5th October.

The agenda said: “This application shall be considered from the point at which the meeting adjourned on 8 September 2022 at 18:44 with questions from the Committee to the Applicant. Please note that this report remains unchanged from the report published for the meeting on 8 September 2022.”

The 116-room hometel in York will open in September 2024. Located inside the city’s historic castle walls and is being developed by our North Star Team.

The York hometel will offer F&B options open to guests and the public alike. Additional amenities will include work and meeting spaces, gyms and laundry rooms. Forty years ago, York councillors approved plans for the Coppergate Centre and the Viking-themed museum below it that we now know as Jorvik – at the second time of asking.

We hope along with our partners York Archaeological Trust that the same will be true for the proposal to create a new, underground Roman museum along with an 88-room aparthotel, 153 new apartments and new office space in Rougier Street.

York Archaeological Trust Chief Executive David Jennings stressed the archaeological dig - to be known as the 'Dig for Eboracum' - would form a ‘key part of the development process.
