Have you heard about the development with the Renters Reform Bill?

Housing campaigners, supporters and renters were left disappointed when the bill failed to pass before the new UK Government was selected - but good news...it's back!

The Renters Reform Bill is set to revolutionize the private sector, with a new version of the Bill returning this Parliamentary session, as confirmed in the King's speech.

The reanimated Bill has two key goals - to abolish Section 21 evictions (no-fault evictions) and to give tenants the right to challenge “unreasonable” rent increases.

Before coming into Government, Labour was outspoken about their desire to see the no fault evictions abolished.

The previous Bill included, but didn’t exclusively cover: scrapping section 21 No-Fault evictions; getting rid of fixed term tenancies; and creating a national landlord register, allowing renters to make informed decisions before entering a tenancy agreement.

We can hopefully predict that the new Bill will follow in the steps of its predecessor.

The English Housing Survey, conducted in 2019-20 by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government found that 20% of English households live in private, rented housing.
