Are you getting the most out of you’re paddock?
Pooh picking is vital to stop the infestation of worms and sick inedible grass.🤮
Topping the long sick inedible grass encourages the growth of new sweet grass.
Weeds such as buttercups,nettles,docks
need spraying to control infestation.
You should be able to graze every available inch of you’re paddock to maximise you’re horses well being.
Example - less hard feed , less hay or haylage
increases you’re horses / ponies well being .

☃️ GET READY FOR WINTER !! 🤦‍♀️

Make sure your paddocks go into winter the best they can it is just as important as getting the work done in spring.

Spraying in the Autumn will help eliminate the second flush of growth, especially with weeds such as ragwort and docks.

With the warm wet weather, growth occurs quickly.

Going into winter with good paddocks means they will have a better chance to be great, healthy places for you horses next year. 🐴

To get most out of your paddocks, from spraying to harrowing to rolling.

Spray regularly at the right times to get the best outcomes.

Many people believe that with one spray, you will get miracle results. However the first hit will only achieve an average of 70% kill.

Spraying works by,
🌟The spray we use will target the weeds in your paddocks, without harming the grass.
🌟The spray will then get into the weeds and slows down the growth of them by attacking the proteins.
🌟As the growth rate of the weeds slows, the grass will still continue at the original pace.
🌟Due this the grass will eventually overcrowd the weeds, resulting in a good, safe paddock.

As previous said this however takes time due to the process.

Having a paddock that is full of weeds, does not just look bad on you but also robs the grass of valuable nutrition.

🍂🍂Autumn is nearly upon us meaning it’s time to prepare your paddocks to make sure they go into winter the best they can be.

To get the best out of your paddocks to create a safe healthy environment for you and your horses, whether it’s spraying, topping or anything your require.

Get your paddocks topped before they seed and stop the spread. 🍃

✅ Topping encourages growth whilst keeping the weeds in check.
✅ Grass loves to be cut, weeds don’t.
✅ Eventually the grass will overcrowd the weeds.

Another benefit is a horse would rather eat the short grass due to it having a sweeter taste.

This warm wet weather has increased all growth. Have a regular maintenance programme to get the best outcomes for your paddocks. 😊

Don’t leave it to late, for any help or advice with your paddocks.

Here’s some information on the importance of keeping on top of the ragwort in your fields!

Make sure you keep a safe environment for you and your horses. 😊

It’s that time of year where we are seeing an increased amount of ragwort in horse's fields... But why is this important?

❗️Ragwort is poisonous to horses because it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Once absorbed through the gut it is converted into toxic activated pyrrole by the liver. These toxins cause long term damage to the liver when eaten, although there has been damage to the heart and lungs also reported.

❗️The damage is irreversible and clinical signs may not be seen for a number of years. Once the horse starts to show clinical signs this is usually an indication of liver failure.

These clinical signs may include:
• Decreased appetite
• Mild weight loss
• Colic
• Diarrhoea or constipation and straining
• Incoordination
• Yawning
In more serve cases we may see signs of neurological issues such as ataxia.

🔹While horses generally will only eat ragwort if the grazing is sparse, or in dried hay, it is important to keep your grazing ragwort free.
Once the plant is in flower it is already spreading, so get those gloves on (people can absorb ragwort through their skin if you don’t use gloves) and get pulling.

❗️Ensure that ragwort is disposed of correctly and not left in the fields, as dried ragwort is thought to be more palatable to horses and therefore more likely to be eaten.
