No coronavirus in Gambia, Health Ministry declares
Africa » Gambia

Tuesday, March 3, 2020
The Ministry of Health on Monday at a press conference declared that there is no COVID-19 coronavirus case in The Gambia.

Modou Njai, director of Health Promotion and Education at the Health Ministry said that the country’s status remains unchanged about the deadly outbreak of coronavirus.

He rubbished the rumour which suggested that there was a coronavirus case in the country, saying The Gambia has not registered any suspected cases of coronavirus.

“The information about the Gambia’s suspected case on coronavirus is false and it has not happened,” he affirmed. “The signs and symptoms possessed by that particular person does not get closer to coronavirus and is not even a suspect.”

He said that the Health Ministry is working very hard to strengthen its surveillance system at the borders. He revealed that presently they have posted public officers at both air and sea ports as part of surveillance strengthening mechanism.

“Before these people were posted, they were having 24hrs shift to monitor people that were coming into the country. IOM is supporting us with capacity building training not only for health workers but for some security personnel as well,” he declared.

On his part, Dr. Desta A. Tiruneh, WHO representative, said the cases of coronavirus in China are showing a decline, while the number of cases outside China is on the rise.

“There are three confirmed African countries about the cases of coronavirus such as Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria. But the level of WHO preparedness efforts are going on and WHO is supporting countries to prepare for any eventuality about the virus,” he said.

“We would be receiving some protective equipment very soon for Gambia to also prepare for any eventuality. Partners in the country are willing to join us to support government in fighting against any diseases or virus,” he said.

Sanna Sambou, Programme coordinator, Disease Control Department, in a presentation, explained that the coronavirus is a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiration Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiration Syndrome (SARS).

“Coronavirus is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. Some transmit easily from person to person, while others do not.”

Among the signs and symptoms, he said, is fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties, pneumonia, severe acute respiration syndrome and kidney failure.

The magnifying glass hovers over the beach on holidays to Brufut. It’s sandwiched between a pair of leafy nature reserves, too.

Beach beauty
Brufut is set on The Gambia’s only coastline, and lives up to expectations with a long slice of sand. The beach is at the foot of tangerine-coloured cliffs, which keeps the shoreline nice and private. In fact, the waterfront here’s one of the most peaceful stretches around. The town behind it’s a similarly simple set-up – there’s a main street lined with a few hotels and a luxury villa complex, plus a handful of bars.

Green features
This place is shoulder to shoulder with one of the region’s most thriving wildlife haunts – the Tanji Bird Reserve. It’s a protected area filled with forestry and lagoons, spanning out for more than 300 acres. Spend the day exploring, and you’ll have 300 species of bird to keep an eye out for. They include black headed herons, redshanks and pied kingfishers.

City neighbours
The Gambia’s biggest town, Serrekunda, is half an hour’s drive along the coast. It’s faster paced than Brufut, with bustling marketplaces and street stalls peddling seafood, vegetables and handicrafts. Carry on along the Banjul-Serrekunda Highway, and you’ll reach St Mary’s Island in another 20 minutes. It’s home to the country’s capital, Banjul, which still operates more as a seaport than a tourist town. Here, you’ll get a real flavour of local life in The Gambia.

Gambia is an increasingly popular holiday destination, with a rash of new resorts on its gorgeous beaches. The country is a friendly, lively place to visit with lovely scenery and lots of colour. Most travel there to lie on a beach.

There is some snorkelling off the beaches, but to get to the reefs, you’ll need a dive boat to take you to blue water. Until dive operators get themselves started up in Gambia, the best option for divers is to make the short hop over to Cape Verde, where there is an established diving scene.

Cape Verde is a collection of islands around 500 km off the African coast. To get there from Gambia, travel up to neighbouring Senegal and fly from Dakar. There are dive sites all around the islands, with reef, wreck and cave diving all on offer.

Cape Verde’s volcanic islands make for some spectacular diving. Explore the underwater volcanic rock ridges and caves, and visit the many wrecks that have failed to negotiate them over the years. The sea floor around Cape Verde is a ships’ graveyard. Unusually, you’ll find wrecks at shallow depths – as little as 10m. There are reefs, too, attracting a wide variety of marine life. Expect to see plenty of colourful schools of reef fish, and maybe rays, nurse sharks, barracuda and tuna.

Take a Gambia scuba diving trip over to Cape Verde and explore a fascinating and very diverse dive area, with over 25 dive sites to try.
