Christmas in Heraklion... 🎄🎁🇬🇷💙🇬🇷

Making these sweet little Greek honey cookies (Melomakarona) always makes us realize that it’s Christmas time! It smells like Christmas!!

Heraklion is a very active city and has a variety of events prepared for Christmas 2021.

No one is able to resist a freshly-made xerotigano (quick-fried thin dough) dipped in honey, kourambiedes (traditional Christmas desserts made with almonds and fresh butter), melomakarona (egg-shaped Christmas desserts made mainly from flour, olive oil and honey) with grated walnuts or a fragrant Christopsomo (Christ’s bread). The city centre is full of sweet and savoury temptations. Follow your nose to the traditional fast food shops serving the renowned gyros or to the superb bakeries with their freshly baked pastries or to shops serving bougatsa ready to offer you unique tastes.

On New Year’s Eve, the set gets even more radiant! Fireworks display and music, people, treats and wishes to celebrate New Year! Leaving Eleftherias Square all visitors can taste traditional bougatsa since on New Year’s Eve all shops serving bougatsa stay open all night long.

ABOUT BOUGATSA :
Do not forget to try Try the Greek Bougatsa with cream and sugar powder at Phyllosophies restaurant (oldest restaurant in town from 1924) at lions square. Bougatsa is with a thin phyllo dough, filling with cream topped with sugar powder & cinnamon.

(Info point: Bougatsa was brought to Greece by Asia Minor refugees after the Asia Minor Disaster. This is a favorite with the locals, especially first thing in the morning! Good to know: Perhaps one of the funniest traditions is carried out in Heraklion, Crete where on New Year's Day people eat large quantities of Bougatsa to ensure that the year will be gratifyingly sweet!!)

17th. November: Celebration in Greece TODAY

The Athens Polytechnic, a massive student demonstration, occurred on 17 November 1973, the most significant protest against the seven-year dictatorship.
It is observed as a public holiday for all educational establishments with commemorative services held at schools.
On the 17th of November, the mind and our heart is at the University of Athens or else know as ”Politexneion”. The 17th of November is the anniversary of the student uprising at the Polytechnic University in Athens in 1973. The demonstrations against the military dictatorship gained momentum and was crushed when tanks crashed the gates of the university killing many students, a protest against the Greek Military Junta (1967–1974).

On winter of 1972, the students started asking free elections for their councils in the universities and a friction with the colonels began.
On February 1973 the students gathered in the Athens Technical University campus but they were disbanded by the police. Later in the year the students helped by about 20000 people capture the building of the Athens University School of Law but they finally have to give up.
Finally on 14th November students from all the Athens area universities gather in the Athens Technical University campus and using its equipment they form a radio station, the only free media station of that time. They ask the colonels to resign so the country could have free elections and ask
everybody to help them in their effort.
About 100000 people are outside supporting the students when the colonels decide to disband the students by force.
So at around 2:00-3:00 am. on 17 Nov. they send tanks to get into the Athens Technical University campus.
This is a black page in the history of Greece. Greek soldiers fight against Greek students.
One tank advances and runs over the campus gate killing every student that was protesting behind.

⭐ So every year on that day we mourn, we honour, we praise the dead students but also we celebrate the beginning of the fall of the military junta which finally surrendered in July 1973. ⭐

28 October (National Holiday)
FREE ENTRACE TO ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM TO HERAKLION (10 minutes walking from us) & KNOSSOS PALACE!!
To celebrate Oxi Day (sometimes spelt Ohi or Ochi) is a national public holiday and commemorated on the 28th October every year in Greece, Cyprus and by Greeks around the world.
Traditionally, Oxi Day is celebrated with parades, flag decorating and wreath laying at various military memorials. Info point: On this day, the Prime Minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas denied Benito Mussolini’s request to allow Italian troops to cross the border into Greece. His decision made on 28th October 1940, is commemorated each year as a day that represents bravery, solidarity and heroism for millions of Greeks all around the world.
