🏰 The fortress of Palaiokastro consists of three uneven levels due to the slope of the hill on which it is built.
The entrance is through the central gate located to the south and it is the only gate in the castle of Crete that is half carved into the rock. To the northeast, the winged lion of Saint Markos is embedded on the central masonry, a corresponding emblem is found in Koules Castle.
The three levels consisted of the lowest level which was the gunpowder stores half built into the slope in order to physically protect them from intrusions.💣🧨
Right next to them was a water tank that collected the rainwater of the slope, which could be used immediately in case of a fire in the gunpowder stores.
On the second level and above the gunpowder stores were the barracks. Finally, on the third and upper level there was the church of the castle.
A small church dedicated to Agios Markos has been built around the ruins of the castle, which operates from the parish of Rodia every Easter Tuesday. 🕍
The fortress of Palaiokastro was built to protect, together with the Fortress of Koules, the bay of Amoudara. It began to be built in 1573, was completed in 1595 and was based on a design by the commander-in-chief Latino Orsini.
