🏘️ Things to Do in Santorini #6 : Explore the Island’s Beautiful Villages 🇬🇷✨
There’s so much more to Santorini than its famous sunsets and beaches. One of the best ways to really experience the island is to explore its beautiful villages. Each has its own personality, history and atmosphere — from dramatic Caldera views and Venetian castles to peaceful squares, vineyards and traditional tavernas.
💙 OIA – THE ICONIC SANTORINI
Of course, we have to start with our beautiful Oia! Famous around the world for its whitewashed cave houses, blue-domed churches and spectacular Caldera views, Oia is much more than just a sunset destination. Wander through the marble laneways, discover little churches, art galleries and boutiques, enjoy coffee overlooking the Aegean and explore the remains of Oia Castle. Make your way down to Ammoudi Bay for a swim or fresh seafood beside the water, then return to the village for one of those legendary Santorini sunsets.
🌅 IMEROVIGLI – THE BALCONY OF THE AEGEAN
Perched high above the Caldera, Imerovigli is quieter and more peaceful than Oia and Fira but offers equally spectacular scenery. Its elevated position has earned it the nickname “Balcony of the Aegean.” Follow the pathways between beautiful churches and traditional houses, stop for lunch or a drink overlooking the volcano, and if you’re feeling energetic, walk out towards Skaros Rock, once the site of an important medieval settlement. It’s also a wonderful location for sunset without quite the same crowds as Oia.
☕ FIROSTEFANI – CALDERA VIEWS & A SLOWER PACE
Just a short walk north of Fira, Firostefani feels noticeably calmer while still offering magnificent views across the Caldera. One of its most recognisable landmarks is the Three Bells of Fira, with its blue dome, white bell tower and incredible volcanic backdrop. Wander along the cliffside pathway, stop for a Greek coffee or leisurely lunch, and simply enjoy the view. It also makes a beautiful stop if you’re walking the famous Fira-to-Oia trail.
🛍️ FIRA – THE HEART OF THE ISLAND
Santorini’s lively capital is where traditional Cycladic architecture meets shopping, dining and nightlife. Lose yourself among the narrow pedestrian streets filled with boutiques, jewellery stores, cafés, restaurants and bars. Visit one of the local museums, walk along the Caldera edge for fantastic views of the volcano, or simply find a terrace and watch the world go by. As evening approaches, Fira comes alive and is one of the best places on the island for dinner, cocktails and nightlife.
🏰 PYRGOS – HISTORY & PANORAMIC VIEWS
If you want to experience a more traditional side of Santorini, Pyrgos should definitely be on your list. Once the capital of the island, this beautiful hilltop village is a maze of narrow pathways, whitewashed houses, hidden courtyards and churches. Slowly make your way uphill towards the remains of the Venetian Kasteli, stopping to explore along the way. Because Pyrgos sits high above the island, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful panoramic views stretching across Santorini, its vineyards and the Aegean. Stay for a meal or glass of local wine and enjoy the slower pace.
🌿 MEGALOCHORI – TRADITIONAL VILLAGE LIFE
Megalochori is one of those villages where you immediately feel like slowing down. Walk beneath its beautiful bell towers and through winding lanes lined with historic mansions, cave houses and traditional homes before arriving at the charming village square. Sit beneath the trees with a Greek coffee, enjoy lunch at a local taverna and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding countryside is also home to vineyards and wineries, making Megalochori a perfect addition to a day of wine tasting.
🏛️ EMPORIO – STEP BACK IN TIME
Emporio offers a completely different side of Santorini. At its heart is the medieval Kasteli, where narrow passageways, stone arches, tiny doorways and old fortified houses create an almost maze-like village within a village. These tightly packed streets once helped protect residents from pirate attacks. Take your time exploring — around almost every corner you’ll find another interesting doorway, church, courtyard or photo opportunity. Afterwards, stop at one of the local cafés or tavernas and enjoy a taste of everyday Santorini away from the busier tourist areas.
🚗 OUR LOCAL TIP:
Set aside a day, hire a car or arrange a driver and go village-hopping around Santorini. Don’t try to rush through them all — choose three or four, wander without a strict itinerary, stop for a Greek coffee, have lunch at a family-run taverna, visit a winery and chat with the locals.
Santorini’s famous views are unforgettable, but exploring its villages allows you to discover the history, traditions and authentic island life behind those postcard images. 💙🇬🇷
