There is something deeply ironic about what happens after every heavy rainfall.

We choose to alter the natural shape of an unorganized beach , a beach without sunbeds, whose landscape has been sculpted for decades by sand, sea and wind , in order to compensate for the consequences of human intervention elsewhere along the shoreline.

Nature had already designed a path for rainwater to reach the sea long before any of us arrived. When that path is blocked, the water will eventually find its way back.

Fortunately, nature will once again restore what was disturbed. Within a few days, the wind, the waves and the sand will reshape the beach, allowing visitors to lay their towels on the shore and still catch a glimpse of the horizon between the ever-growing rows of umbrellas.
Unfortunately, nature will also remind us of another reality. The next heavy rain will once again show the water where it needs to go, and the stream will reopen, just as it always has.

Because nature may be patient, but it usually has the final word.

(This photo shows a bulldozer removing sand from the beach in front of Aphrodite Skiathos, altering the natural shape of the shoreline and disrupting holidaymakers who were already using the beach.
According to the bulldozer operator, the work was being carried out under instructions from and in the presence of the Mayor of Skiathos. The sand was being transported to a nearby section of the beach where recent rainfall had created a channel leading to the sea.
What concerns us is not only the intervention itself, but also the condition in which the area was left afterwards.)

Some evenings in Skiathos feel almost unreal. 🌈

Tonight, a rainbow (or better say two) stretched across the bay, reminding us that the best moments are often the ones you never planned for.

Some things simply refuse to fit inside a photograph.

Tonight's moonrise over the sea is one of them.

The camera captured just a little of it, the moon, the colours and the reflection on the water, but not the feeling of standing on the balcony and watching it slowly rise from the horizon.

We may need to install an emergency alert system at Aphrodite:

A spectacular sky event is currently taking place.

June 1st.

For many, summer begins today.

We remember it with the words of Kazantzakis, a few lines to Eleni that somehow said everything about it: the long days, the warm rocks, the boats, the waiting.

Some words don't age.

"The days are vast here. I sleep out on the rooftop, beneath a sky overflowing with stars. The Scorpion hangs above me, wheeling slowly through the night, and at dawn I wake with a light heart, ready for the sacred labor of the day.
Blessed days.
The sun has bronzed my skin deep red.
I swim in the sea, stretch out on the warm rocks to dry, watch the fishing boats drift across the water, smoke my Japanese to***co, think back on all I have seen,
