CHINESE INVESTMENT SET TO BOOM

The floodgates are set to open for Chinese buyers to pour US$10.9 billion into New Zealand real estate as restrictions on privately held capital are eased, according to a new report.

The report from a leading real estate listings website, with 2.5 million properties and businesses for sale, studied the effects of the Chinese government's second phase of its Qualified Domestic Individual Investor (QDII2) programme to allow its citizens to buy overseas property.

Rich Chinese are drawn to New Zealand.

The pilot program will enable US$11 billion of new Chinese money to flow into New Zealand's real estate market. That's based on wealthy Chinese investing 10 per cent of their assets into international property, including commercial. It's also based on NZ getting about 3.3 per cent of that property-specific investment, as it has in the past," he said.

SINGAPORE GOVT IN NEW AUCKLAND PROPERTY DEAL

The Singaporean Government is expanding its New Zealand property holdings, taking a further stake in Auckland via a new office block yet to be built.

Singapore's government has spent more than $1.2 billion on New Zealand real estate in the last year, splurging on malls throughout the country as well as some of the flashest new office blocks, particularly around the rapidly evolving Wynyard Quarter on Auckland's waterfront.

"The Singaporeans are coming here because they perceive New Zealand to be one of the best places internationally to invest."

BILLION DOLLAR BUILDING TO BECOME BRISBANE'S TALLEST TOWER

After years of false starts, Brisbane's tallest building is set to finally get off the ground.

The 90 storey, 274 metre tower at 222 Margaret Street will be built to the maximum allowable height for city buildings.

It will fall behind only Melbourne's Eureka Tower and Q1 on the Gold Coast in height once completed.

The $1 billion dollar project is a joint venture between Sydney-based property developer Billbergia and investment house, AMP Capital – a five-year partnership which has previously delivered more than 870 apartments in Sydney.

The development includes both the main tower and a second, smaller high rise in Mary Street, which is planned to house a five star hotel.

The larger of the two towers will be exclusively one, two and three bedroom residences, bolstering CBD apartment numbers by 1100.

Billbergia managing director John Kinsella described the joint venture as an opportunity to create an iconic Brisbane city building.

“Brisbane has a passionate desire to become one of the world’s top ten lifestyle cities and its transformation has already begun,” Mr Kinsella said.

“Brisbane Skytower will take advantage of the opportunity to meet demand for premium, yet attainable, dwellings in the CBD and presents an exciting opportunity for local, interstate and international investors to be a part of Brisbane’s journey towards ‘new world city’ status.”

Monocle magazine has just issued its eighth annual Quality of Life Survey of the top 25 cities in the world.

The Australasian cities of Melbourne (3rd), Sydney (11th), Auckland (12th) and Brisbane (23rd) all made the cut.

The Monocle survey seeks to measure the quality of cities in terms of the intangibles that light up their communities, as well as the infrastructure that supports them.

Important criteria include safety/crime; climate, medical care, public transport, tolerance, urban design, architecture, government policy, business conditions, and access to nature.

Global — Finding the measure of a city is as much about the intangibles that light up a community as the infrastructure keeping it going. We've sized up where the balance is best with our annual top 25.
