Posted • Before going down in flames, BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig made a sensational discovery: an enormous new oilfield. Named Kaskida, the area contained billions of dollars worth of petroleum. But it was so far beneath the sea and under such high pressure, the technology needed to develop it didn’t exist.

In the wake of the largest oil spill in history, Kaskida was all but forgotten. The catastrophe had essentially closed off the Gulf of Mexico to advanced exploration. And no one, certainly not BP, wanted to risk the potential lawsuits that would come with it.
