Originally from the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, Donald emigrated to Hong Kong in 1987. At that time, as we looked forward to the dawning of the Pacific Century, Hong Kong was to remain a British colony for just ten years more. Donald is now a seasoned business professional with deep roots in the community and a comprehensive knowledge of the Hong Kong property market. But he has not forgotten t
hose first days.
“I arrived on a one way ticket and with insufficient money to return home. Breathless from the swerving, roof-skimming approach into the old Kai Tak airport and from the cushioned blast of unaccustomed heat and humidity, I stepped expectantly from the arrivals hall into the bright prospect of my first morning in Hong Kong. Guidebook in hand, I quickly found a cheap room at the notorious Chungking Mansions. There was just enough space in the room to insert my suitcase which I then had to clamber over to reach the short, narrow bed. In a tiny cubicle at my feet was the shower, ingeniously located directly above the toilet and washbasin. I reasoned that in Hong Kong everyone was much smaller and that a life of privilege had induced in me unrealistic and extravagant expectations. I ventured out to explore Nathan Road and to buy a copy of the paper. Scanning the classifieds for an apartment and a job, I noticed with dismay that the asking rents exceeded the offered salaries…”
Prior to joining Proway, Donald traveled for several years in Africa and the Middle East as Regional Sales Director for a Hong Kong manufacturer of diesel generators and renewable power systems, specializing in power solutions for telecom networks. Widely traveled and with a business career that has also included fashion and financial markets, Donald relates easily to people from all walks of life. With his professional work ethic and commitment to excellence, Donald has found a natural fit at Proway. He is dedicated to providing the best service possible to both local and overseas clients, both individuals and companies, and takes his professional responsibilities very seriously.
“Property transactions can involve very large sums of money and will often be the most important transactions of a client’s life. I strive always to live up to the Estate Agents’ Code of Ethics which states that Estate Agents shall always serve clients with honesty, fidelity and integrity. Actually, I think that is the very least that a client should expect.”
In his free time Donald loves to ride his motorcycle around HK Island and the New Territories, exploring places that some other agents might never reach!
