En BICA trabajamos todos los días para proteger el ecosistema marino de las Islas de la Bahía, y sabemos que una de las mayores amenazas para nuestros arrecifes y especies marinas sigue siendo el plástico de un solo uso.

Cada bolsa plástica que llega al mar puede tardar más de 500 años en desaparecer. Mientras tanto, las tortugas marinas y otras especies la confunden con medusas, la consumen y mueren por intoxicación o con el estómago lleno de plástico que nunca pueden digerir.

Por eso, la Municipalidad de Roatán aprobó la ordenanza que prohíbe las bolsas plásticas desechables en la isla. La ley ya existe, ahora el cambio depende de todos nosotros.

Súmate a la protección de nuestros ecosistemas y fauna marina:
✅ Lleva tu bolsa reutilizable
✅ Rechaza el plástico de un solo uso

📢 Y si eres de otra isla, municipio o comunidad que aún no tiene esta ordenanza: Roatán ya demostró que se puede. Este cambio empezó con una petición ciudadana de 53,000 firmas, la próxima ordenanza puede empezar contigo. Lleva esta idea a tu alcaldía.

At BICA, we work every day to protect the marine ecosystem of the Bay Islands, and we know one of the biggest threats to our reefs and marine life is still single use plastic.
Every plastic bag that reaches the ocean can take more than 500 years to disappear. Meanwhile, sea turtles and other species mistake it for a jellyfish, eat it, and die from poisoning or with stomachs full of plastic they can never digest.

That's why the Municipality of Roatan passed an bylaw banning disposable plastic bags on the island. The law already exists, now the change is up to all of us.

✅ Say no to single use plastic

📢 And if you're from another island, municipality, or community that doesn't have this ordinance yet: Roatan already proved it's possible. This change started with a citizen petition of 53,000 signatures, the next ordinance could start with you. Take this idea to your local government.

If you need a dive shop and a place to stay, you’re in luck! You can yell to Rolando from our deck to schedule a dive! (You can also be neighborly and walk out the gate to properly introduce yourself, but we don’t judge.)
