SZIGET FESTIVAL ADDS LANA DEL REY AS LAST HEADLINER FOR 2018 LINE-UP
Budapest-based Sziget Festival has added another superstar, Lana Del Rey, to this year’s line-up. The queen of melancholic songs will join the previously announced six other headliners on the Island of Freedom this August: British indie rock band Arctic Monkeys, five-times Brit Awards nominee Dua Lipa, British virtual band Gorillaz, Grammy winner rapper Kendrick Lamar, Norwegian DJ Kygo and the London based folk-rock band Mumford and Sons.

The American singer and songwriter debuted with her first studio album under the name Lana del Rey in 2010, then released her second album, Born to Die, in 2012, with hits like Video Games, Summertime Sadness and Blue Jeans. Her music has been repeatedly noted for its unique, melancholic style and cinematic sound, as well as its references to pop culture.

The latest studio album of the singer, Lust for Life, including collaborations with The Weeknd, ASAP Rocky and Stevie Nicks, came out in 2017, and debuted at Number One on the Billboard albums chart and was nominated for “Best Pop Vocal Album” at the 60th Grammy Awards this January.

Besides Lana del Rey, Sziget Festival also revealed other performers, including former The Knife member Fever Ray, Børns, Don Diablo, and New Zealand rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

This year’s Sziget Festival, also known as the Island of Freedom, will take place between 8-15 August, on the Hajógyári Island in the middle of Budapest.

Budapest Christmas Markets – Traditional & Charming

Budapest is full of Christmas markets, which usually open around mid November and close at the end of December (December 31) each year.

The most beautiful, oldest and internationally acclaimed Budapest Christmas fair is the Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square in the heart of the city (since 1998).
On Vorosmarty Square, or on the Advent Fair by the Basilica, or at the Christmas market on Fo square in Obuda, you will find beautiful quality handcrafts, made with passion, and love (but you will not find silly plastic key chains, gaudy belching Christmas T-shirts, or giant Santa Clauses). Budapest Xmas markets focus on trying to preserve authentic Hungarian folk art, traditions and offer really good quality handcrafts rather than commercialized mainstream Christmas gifts.
Time Travel – Away from Commercial Showiness
So the Xmas fairs in Budapest are more about buying little hand made gifts, drinking mulled wines, nibbling Hungarian pastries (like the chimney shaped cylindrical ‘Kurtos kalacs’), eating traditional street foods (sausages, snacks, roast chestnut, etc.), and having fun by meeting, mingling, chatting and listening to the nice Christmas concerts on the stages of the markets.
