Is Bali really preparing to ban Airbnb by 2026?
Recent discussions between Bali’s government, hotel associations, and national authorities have revealed a complex situation around short-term rentals.
Governor Wayan Koster is pushing for tighter control over daily rentals — citing issues like unreported income, missing permits, and tax leakage. Meanwhile, tourism continues to grow, yet Bali’s regional revenue isn’t rising in the same way.
But despite headlines, Indonesia’s central government clarified that they are not banning platforms like Airbnb.
The real target?
➡️ Unlicensed, unregistered, and illegal short-term rentals that operate outside the tourism ecosystem.

✔️ Legal villas can still operate
✔️ Airbnb will remain accessible
✔️ Regulations may simply become stricter and more transparent
