Aci Gumang 2024: A Historic Moment Marking the Return of Ide Betara Betari Datah to Pura Gumang

The Return of Ide Betara Betari Datah After Hundreds of Years

On October 18, 2024, a historic moment occurred in Desa Adat Bugbug, Karangasem. After being absent for hundreds of years, the sacred presence of Ide Betara Betari from Desa Adat Datah returned to Pura Gumang during the holy ceremony of Aci Gumang 2024. This return was a long-awaited moment for the community, as the last time Betara Datah visited Gumang was so long ago that it remained only as a memory passed down through generations.

Aci Gumang 2024 was a Panca Desa Jangkep (a complete gathering of five traditional villages), with the participation of 21 sacred jempana (portable shrines) representing the Betara-Betari from Desa Adat Datah. This grand procession was not only a powerful spiritual event but also a strong symbol of unity among the five traditional villages in the Panca Desa alliance.

Excitement Among the Community for This Sacred Event:
The enthusiasm of the people was evident in their warm welcome for the 2024 Usaba Gumang procession. Emotions ran high as the sacred moment unfolded, with feelings of joy and reverence filling Pura Gumang as the deities were ceremoniously ascended into the temple. Not only did the Panca Desa (Bugbug, Jasri, Bebandem, Ngis, and Datah) participate, but many also came from outside the region to witness this sacred event.

Under the leadership of Jero Nyoman Purwa Ngurah Arsana, the Keliang (head) of Desa Adat Bugbug, the 2024 Aci Gumang ceremony was carried out in a calm and orderly manner. Careful planning by the Prajuru Era Baru (new generation village officials) and the villagers ensured the smooth ex*****on of the event, despite its large scale and multi-village involvement.

A Festive Crowd at Pura Gumang:
Usaba Gumang 2024 attracted tens of thousands of people. An estimated 50,000 attendees from various villages crowded the Pura Gumang area. The atmosphere grew more festive as the procession of jempana from Desa Adat Datah arrived. Cheers and joyful chants welcomed the arrival of the Betara-Betari.

The provincial road from Amlapura to Denpasar experienced total congestion from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM WITA, particularly during the Betara’s ascension to Pura Gumang. Despite the traffic, the people remained patient, understanding the spiritual importance of this ancestral tradition.

A Symbol of Spiritual Power and Unity:
Aci Gumang is one of the largest traditional ceremonies in Desa Bugbug, Karangasem, intended to maintain cosmic balance and pray for the safety of the community. It is more than a religious ritual — it reflects unity and collective strength among the Panca Desa.

The presence of Betara Betari from Desa Datah carries deep spiritual meaning, signifying a strengthened bond among the five villages. The community believes that with Betara Datah’s return, prosperity and peace will continue to bless the region.

Challenges in Maintaining Ceremony Harmony:
Behind the success of Aci Gumang 2024 were significant challenges. A group attempted to disrupt the procession, claiming to represent the community. They tried to exploit this sacred moment to incite unrest.

However, due to solid coordination between security forces, pecalang (traditional security), and customary leaders, the situation remained under control. Preventive measures had been taken well in advance with multiple parties involved in maintaining safety. As a result, provocations failed to interfere with the proceedings, and Aci Gumang continued solemnly and peacefully.

Community Appreciation for the Village Leader:
The leadership of Jero Nyoman Purwa Ngurah Arsana, the Keliang of Desa Adat Bugbug, received high praise from the community for the successful ex*****on of Aci Gumang 2024. Not only was the ceremony well-organized, but his role in bringing the Betara-Betari from Desa Datah — a feat not seen for generations — was seen as monumental.

Throughout his term, Jero Nyoman Purwa Ngurah Arsana has consistently worked to maintain unity among the Panca Desa. His openness in communication with traditional and community leaders has been key in preventing conflict and preserving harmony in Desa Bugbug.

Fostering the Next Generation of Cultural Guardians:
Aci Gumang 2024 also served as an educational platform for the younger generation. Many youths were involved in preparations and logistics — from welcoming guests to managing traffic. This was aimed at instilling love and respect for traditional customs from an early age.

Village elders used the moment to teach values such as togetherness, cooperation, and ancestral reverence. This demonstrated that tradition is not only preserved by the elders but also proudly carried forward by the youth.

Reflection and Future Hope:
This historic moment will be remembered as a symbol of revival and unity for the Panca Desa communities. The people hope Aci Gumang will continue to be a sacred celebration that brings blessings, peace, and harmony. The success of this year’s ceremony is motivation to continue preserving tradition and unity.

Aci Gumang 2024 is more than a customary ceremony; it is a powerful reminder of spiritual and social strength. Through this moment, the people of Bugbug and surrounding villages are reminded that unity and loyalty to tradition are keys to lasting harmony.

In an era of rapid change and modernization, the spirit of safeguarding customs must remain alive. The people of Desa Bugbug and the broader Panca Desa will continue to honor their ancestors by preserving cultural heritage with deep love and dedication.

Relief of Bugbug Village: A Symbol of Culture and Tradition
A New Icon of Bugbug Village

The traditional village of Bugbug now boasts a new landmark that reflects its cultural identity and traditions—a monumental relief completed in 2024. This relief measures approximately 29 meters by 5 meters, with a carving depth of 18 to 20 cm. Beyond being a work of art, this relief stands as a cultural heritage symbol, portraying the traditional life of the Bugbug community.

The relief took about a year to complete, showcasing the complexity and intricate craftsmanship of local artisans. Every carved element narrates historical stories, noble values, and traditional rituals that continue to be preserved by the people of Bugbug.

Aesthetic Transformation of the Village Gate

As part of efforts to develop the village into a tourism destination, the main gate of Bugbug Village now appears more grand with the combination of three main elements: the relief, the design of Banjar Adat Segaa, and Bugbug’s signature gate. This relief not only enhances the visual appeal of the village but also reinforces the cultural character passed down through generations.

This relief is a part of the traditional village program initiated by the Prajuru leadership for the 2020-2025 period. The goal is to enhance the village’s tourism appeal to both domestic and international visitors. With improved infrastructure and growing tourism attractions, this initiative is expected to contribute positively to the welfare of the community through the tourism sector.

Development Initiative by KDA Jero Nyoman Purwa Ngurah Arsana

This monumental relief was an initiative by the Head of the Traditional Village (KDA) Jero Nyoman Purwa Ngurah Arsana, who served from 2020 to 2025. Along with the village council (Prajuru), he worked to create an innovation that supports the development of cultural tourism in Bugbug Village.

Beyond serving as a tourist attraction, the relief also functions as an educational medium for the community, particularly the younger generation, to better understand their village’s history and customs. This relief is expected to strengthen the traditional values inherited from their ancestors.

Meaning and Philosophy of the Bugbug Relief

This relief illustrates a sacred religious procession for the people of Bugbug—the ceremonial es**rt (ngiring) or carrying (mundut) of Ide Betara to Pura Gumang. This procession is carried out with great reverence and communal spirit, reflecting a religious society that upholds strong values of cooperation.

One of the significant aspects of the relief is the depiction of the "mebiyase" ritual among the jempana, a sacred shrine where Ide Betara resides. This ritual serves as a purification stage before the main procession, signifying the spiritual preparation of all participants.
The relief is expected to serve as a visual medium that effectively portrays the richness of Bugbug’s customs and culture. Visitors not only admire the beauty of the carvings but also gain a deeper understanding of the profound meanings behind each element depicted in the relief.

Funding and Commitment to Development

The construction of this relief was funded through the Traditional Village Revenue Budget (APDA) of Bugbug for the years 2023 and 2024. The allocation of these funds demonstrates the village’s commitment to preserving and developing its culture as a key asset in supporting the tourism sector.
With cultural-based projects like this, Bugbug Village continues to evolve as a tourism destination that offers not only natural beauty but also well-preserved cultural wisdom. This relief stands as tangible evidence that Bugbug Village has a clear vision for maintaining its traditional heritage while adapting it to modern tourism.

Relief as a Cultural Tourism Destination

This monumental relief serves as a major attraction for visitors interested in art, history, and culture. Besides being a tourist site, the relief also holds the potential for development through various cultural tourism programs, such as:
• Cultural Tours: Guiding visitors around the village while educating them about the history and philosophy of the relief with local guides.
• Woodcarving Workshops: Providing visitors with hands-on experience in learning traditional Balinese carving techniques.
• Traditional Ceremonies and Cultural Festivals: Hosting annual events featuring artistic performances, traditional rituals, and Bugbug’s signature cuisine.
• Cultural Education for the Younger Generation: The relief serves as an educational resource for local children to understand and appreciate their cultural heritage.

Community Participation in Relief Preservation

The people of Bugbug play a crucial role in maintaining the beauty and sustainability of this relief. Efforts to achieve this include:
• Regular Maintenance: Engaging the local community in cleaning and protecting the relief from weather-related damage.
• Public Education: Conducting awareness programs about the significance of the relief as part of the village’s identity.
• Sustainable Tourism Management: Ensuring that Bugbug’s cultural tourism is managed responsibly while preserving environmental and traditional values.

Future Prospects for the Bugbug Village Relief

With this relief in place, Bugbug Village has the potential to become one of Bali’s top cultural tourism destinations. The relief not only attracts tourists but also strengthens the community’s sense of unity and identity in facing modern developments.

This relief is proof that tradition and culture can coexist with modernization without losing their essence. As a new icon, it is hoped that the relief will continue to stand as a silent witness to the village’s cultural journey and inspire future generations to preserve the rich traditions passed down through time.

With strong community commitment and support from the village government, Bugbug has the potential to grow into a widely recognized cultural tourism destination.

Happy Celebration of Piodalan Sanghyang Raja Purana (Aci Manda) and Rahina Sipeng (Nyepi Adat) According to the Tradition of Desa Adat Bugbug, February 27-28, 2025

Aci Manda is a sacred ritual to invoke and honor Sanghyang Aji Raja Purana, the guardian of the hidden inscription of Desa Adat Bugbug. This Manda tradition is also understood as the embodiment of all ceremonies and rituals practiced in the village.

During the Manda procession, the Daha (young women) and Truna (young men) will march from Pura Puseh, heading south past Pura Bale Agung to Banjar Adat Segaa. They will then proceed northward and circle Pura Bale Agung three times before concluding with a communal prayer at the temple.

Aci Manda is part of the Bhuta Yadnya ritual, performed in preparation for Ngesanga (Nyepi) in the month of Kawulu. This tradition holds deep significance in maintaining the balance of the universe—both the Bhuana Agung (macrocosm) and Bhuana Alit (microcosm).

A day after Aci Manda, the village observes Nyepi Adat (customary Nyepi), which falls on Panglong 14 Sasih Kawulu, Panglong 15 Sasih Kawulu, or Penanggal 1 Sasih Kesanga, depending on which date aligns with the auspicious Triwara Beteng. This year, Nyepi or Sipeng in Desa Adat Bugbug will take place on Friday, February 28, 2025.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM OF FARMERS IN BUGBUG VILLAGE

Farmers in Bugbug village cultivate rice using a highly structured and traditional approach. They utilize a sophisticated irrigation system to supply water to the rice fields. The process begins with land preparation and division of the fields using the subak system, which is a well-organized traditional irrigation system. Subsequently, rice seedlings are planted at specific intervals in the irrigated fields. This planting process typically involves communal collaboration among farmers in the surrounding area.

The irrigation system in Bugbug village is highly organized and a cultural heritage. One renowned system is the Subak, a traditional irrigation system that has existed for centuries. Subak regulates water management for agriculture, particularly for the rice fields in Bugbug village. Water from natural sources such as rivers is distributed to the fields through well-structured channels.

The Subak system is governed by local customs and traditions. There are farmer communities forming groups to manage fair water usage, scheduling, and the quantity of water allocated to each plot. This not only serves as an irrigation system but also as a significant cultural and social aspect in Bali, acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage. This system reflects the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, depicting the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the divine.

LUMPADANG SUBAK IN BUGBUG VILLAGE:

The expansive rice field area owned by Bugbug village is divided into six Subaks: Subak Desa, Subak Galogor, Subak Mepaang, Subak Tegakin, and Subak Lumpadang.

Subak Lumpadang covers approximately 20 hectares of certified land owned by 66 individuals and cultivated by around 46 laborers who are members of the Subak. Its boundaries include the northern area adjacent to Bukit Bakung, the western side bordering Bukit Lumpadang, the eastern side adjacent to Tukad Buu, and the southern area bordering the rice fields of Subak Tegakin.

Leadership in Subak Lumpadang:

The highest authority in Subak Lumpadang is called the Kelihan Subak/Pekaseh, followed by Pangliman (vice), Penyarikan (secretary), Juru Raksa (treasurer), and Juru Arah/Saya (coordinator).
Operational funding comes from member savings and third-party subsidies, such as government grants.

Regular activities in Subak Lumpadang include member meetings, collective cleaning of water channels in the fields, and ceremonial events at the Subak Lumpadang temple.

The decision on which crops to plant in the Subak Lumpadang area such as rice, onions, corn, watermelon, and others is collectively determined during meetings.

In the ex*****on of their activities, Subak members adhere to jointly established rules.

Chairman of Subak Lumpadang, Mr. I Wayan Duduk, mentioned that the Subak irrigation system has been passed down through generations and continues to function effectively. This is due to all members steadfastly adhering to the principles of mutual cooperation and familial bonds

26/10/2023

In managing agricultural land in Bugbug Village in the past, the community relied on manual labor, which was a local culture in farming, especially in rice fields. Tools such as oxen, sickles, hoes, and the like were used. Through the tradition of mutual cooperation, a sense of community among farmers was fostered.

As time has progressed, Bugbug Village has started to be influenced by various aspects of globalization, including technology, knowledge, and so on. The use of land cultivation tools now includes the use of mechanical power, such as tractors, as it is considered more productive and efficient. This allows the land to be processed and planted more quickly.

The habits of farmers in land cultivation have also started to transition into the modern realm. Many new elements have entered Bugbug Village, seemingly altering long-held traditions deeply rooted in the community.

For the welfare of the people, technological advancement indeed must be embraced.
