Lombok Airport Provides 400 Boxes of Iftar Meal during Ramadan

TEMPO.CO, Mataram - The organizer of Lombok International Airport (LIA) provides 400 boxes of meal for iftar (fast-breaking) every day during Ramadan for passengers who are at the airport terminal to maintain a good relationship with the passengers.

The meal would be given starting from the first day of fasting month of Ramadan or 17 May at 17:30 local time. In the total of full one month, there will be 12,500 boxes of iftar meal provided.

Lombok Airport General Manager I Gusti Ngurah Ardita said the activities were carried out by the airport's ambassadors and customer service officers at three points, namely at the arrival area, the domestic waiting room and the international waiting room.

"We want to share to passengers, both who are arriving and departing," said Ngurah Ardita, Saturday, May 18.

Previously, he mentioned that Lombok International Airport had been nominated as a friendly airport for Muslim tourists. The distribution of iftar food is one of the concerns and as a means to share blessings in Ramadan with the passengers who are fasting.

Since before the fast-breaking time at 17:30 to 19:00 local time, there are 15 domestic and international flights, both arrival and departure.

Indonesia looking to turn three national parks into new biosphere reserves

Indonesia is set to propose that three of its naturally beautiful national parks as new biosphere reserves: Sembilang National Park, Betung Kerihun National Park and Mount Rinjani National Park. The new proposal is to be announced at Man and the Biosphere Program International Coordinating Council in July.

Sembilang National Park in South Sumatra covers over 2000 km of land and is dominated by peat forests and swamps. The massive park is said to have one of the most complex shorebird communities and has over 213 species documented there. It also supports the world’s largest colony of milky storks, who are now classed as endangered due to intense hunting pressure, human disturbance and the rapid loss of coastal habitat. Meanwhile, the stunning Mount Rinjani National Park located on the island of Lombok is the third highest volcano of Indonesia at 3726 metres (12,224 feet). The breathtaking peak is said to be sacred to the Hindus and Sasaks (people live mainly on the island of Lombok) who make pilgrimages to the summit and leave offerings for the gods.

Biosphere reserves have a particular focus on conservation and biodiversity.

Authority probes Facebook ad selling Indonesian island for Rp 250b

The West Nusa Tenggara administration is setting up an investigative team to respond to an advertisement on Facebook offering Satonda Island in Dompu regency for Rp 250 billion (US$17.9 million).

Satonda is a unique island, as if shaped like a ring because it has a salt lake in the center. On travel sites, Satonda is referred to as “magical”, “mythical” or “mysterious”. The island is popular among tourists also visiting Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara.

Facebook account “Agent Property Lombok” posted an ad to sell the island, claiming the size of the island was 7,000-hectares. It says the buyer can construct buildings only on 550-ha and should keep the rest as a conservation area.

“We received information about this offer from the public. This violated the law,” assistant I for law and administration at the administration’s secretariat, Agus Patria, said Friday afternoon in Mataram, the provincial capital. Only the state can sell an island, he went on.

Satonda Island is part of the Natural Tourism Park managed by the province’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

Satonda is included in the province’s tourism investment program with a focus on maritime and fishery tourism. However, any investment should follow the right procedures.

West Nusa Tenggara has at least 278 islands apart from the largest ones: Lombok and Sumbawa. Of the number, 40 are inhabited.

MCC Compact celebrates US-Indonesia partnership

A US government Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) delegation joined US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan Jr. during his visit to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), to mark the closure of MCC’s compact with the Indonesian government.

Ambassador Donovan and the MCC delegation led by vice president and secretary of the MCC board Jeanne Hauch and vice president for congressional and public affairs Karen Sessions met with NTB Governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi on Monday to recognize the latter’s strong support for the MCC projects in the province.

“The progress here is an example of the success of the compact across the country, which has provided a strong foundation for the Indonesian government to help millions of Indonesians lead healthier and more economically secure lives,” said Donovan in his statement during the final day of the three-day site visit.

In Lombok, the MCC delegation met with participants and beneficiaries of a number of Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) grant projects, including an integrated health care post (Posyandu) and a procurement service unit.

MCC’s five-year compact with Indonesia has made investments that have helped reduce poverty and promote economic growth and engagement with the private sector.

Among MCC's successes in NTB is the Community-based Health and Nutrition Project, which has helped reduce stunting in eight NTB districts.

On Tuesday, the delegation is set to attend the final closeout ceremony in Jakarta, hosted by Millennium Challenge Account - Indonesia and the National Development Planning Ministry. (ebf)

MCC Compact helps boost NTB welfare, economy: Governor

West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor TGH Muhammad Zainul Majdi expressed his gratitude, as well as that of the provincial administration and NTB residents, to the United States government for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, which he said has helped improve people’s welfare and the economy.

“We, both NTB administration and people, appreciate and want to thank the MCC, which trusted our province as the program’s targeted location. This has contributed to development in this area,” Zainul told journalists.

The governor was speaking after he met with US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan Jr. and an MCC delegation on Monday, the final day of their three-day visit to Lombok to mark the closure of the MCC’s compact with the Indonesian government.

MCC board vice president and secretary Jeanne Hauch, and congressional and public affairs vice president Karen Sessions led the delegation, which met with participants and beneficiaries of a number of Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) grant projects, including an integrated health care post (Posyandu) and a procurement service unit.
