Tonight, on the first night of Hanukkah, as we prepare to light the first candle of the Festival of Light, we were confronted with heartbreaking darkness.

The shooting that impacted the Jewish community in Sydney today is devastating beyond words. I grew up in Bondi Beach, and the place where this attack occurred is literally across the road from what was once my home.
To see violence strike a community is painful and sobering.

And yet, Hanukkah reminds us why we light candles in the first place. Not because the darkness isn’t real, but because even the smallest flame has the power to push it back.

We will not dim ourselves.
We will not retreat.
We will continue to show up with courage, unity, compassion, and light.
Our strength has always been in our ability to keep shining, especially when the world feels heavy.

May this Hanukkah bring healing to those affected, comfort to those who are grieving, and renewed hope to our people everywhere.

May we continue to add light, one candle at a time.
