Why does this living room feel twice its size without adding a single extra square foot?

Because the architecture is designed in section, light, and movement — not just in plan.

A double-height living volume anchors the home, with a mezzanine maintaining visual continuity across levels. Space unfolds along a linear axis—from entry corridor to living hall—terminating at a full-height glazed façade that connects the interior to the garden.

Daylight becomes the primary architectural material. Clerestory openings and tall glazing draw light deep inside, animating brick, timber rafters, and stone floors through the day.

The vertical volume also supports passive ventilation, allowing warm air to rise while cooler air flows in from the shaded garden.

The result is a space shaped by light, climate, and section—where architecture is experienced as a sequence of expanding volumes rather than a collection of rooms.

Most corridors are designed for movement.
This one was designed for pause.

In this residence, a narrow transition becomes a spatial moment. An olive-green wall anchors the corridor, holding a disciplined grid of sculptural installations that introduce rhythm along the passage.

Opposite, a full-height glazed façade frames the landscape and extends visual depth indoors.

As the sun moves, the mullion grid casts shifting shadows across the floor and walls, allowing daylight to animate the space through the day.

A monolithic timber console grounds the composition, introducing warmth against calm plaster surfaces.

Sometimes architecture reveals itself quietly—when light, material, and movement transform a simple passage into an experience.

𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 exploring the idea of a 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁—where spatial quality, material expression, and daylight shape the everyday experience of work.

The design focuses on a 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱, creating a seamless relationship between interior workspace and outdoor light well. Full-height glazing visually extends the room beyond its footprint, allowing natural light and landscape elements to become part of the workspace.

The material palette is intentionally restrained:
• White textured masonry walls for brightness and depth
• Light timber flooring to introduce warmth
• Exposed wood ceiling beams to define rhythm and scale
• A solid wood conference table acting as the spatial anchor

The courtyard functions as both 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, softening the boundary between built form and nature—an approach often found in 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻.

Rather than large corporate floorplates, the project explores 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆—one where spatial character, natural light, and material craftsmanship elevate everyday collaboration.

These interior spaces illustrate a 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, where the spatial framework itself regulates comfort. The rooms align along a linear axis that culminates in a full-height opening, allowing daylight to travel deep into the interior.

Here, windows are not treated as simple apertures.
They operate as 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 — negotiating light, breeze, and visual connection with the outdoors.

Furniture placement, shelving systems, and circulation remain deliberately restrained, allowing the architecture to prioritize 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Several climate-responsive principles typically shape such spatial experiences:

Retail architecture sits at the intersection of psychology, movement, and spatial logic — shaping how people enter, explore, pause, and discover.

Three design decisions often determine how a retail space performs.

1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱

The first moment between street and interior is critical.

A clear entrance, layered transition space, and strong sightlines create an intuitive invitation into the store. Rather than a closed glass façade, a porous threshold allows the street to visually extend into the interior.

2️⃣ 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲

Shoppers rarely move randomly.

Most visitors naturally follow a gentle circulation loop through the store. Thoughtful placement of displays, lighting accents, and material transitions creates a rhythm of movement and pause, allowing products to reveal themselves gradually.

3️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿

The billing counter acts as a spatial anchor.

Placed carefully, it stabilizes the layout while maintaining clear visual connections across the store. The goal is not interruption, but continuity within the overall spatial sequence.

Interestingly, many of these principles resonate with traditional 𝗩𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘂-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, which historically emphasized orientation, balance, and intuitive movement within built environments.

Retail design, ultimately, is not decoration.

Architecture often reveals itself in the quiet moments between rooms.

This interior threshold study explores how minimal elements can produce a powerful spatial composition. A deep structural beam frames the transition from inside to outside, while an angled concrete plane beyond introduces a subtle sense of movement within an otherwise calm geometry.

Instead of relying on objects, the design draws strength from proportion, framing, and material restraint. A simple bench, a textured pedestal, and a sculptural wall piece create a moment of pause—allowing the architecture to hold the space.

Natural light becomes the primary design instrument. As sunlight enters through the opening, it traces the edges of concrete and plaster, casting sharp shadow lines across the dark stone floor.

The framed opening extends the interior visually into the landscape, allowing light, air, and view to move freely through the threshold. In tropical architecture, these spatial devices are not aesthetic gestures—they are fundamental to comfort and environmental responsiveness.

The Play of Light: Where Concrete Meets Brick.

In this residential project in Bangalore—Kodalli’s Happy Place—the design focuses on the simple tension between the strength of concrete and the timeless warmth of exposed brick.

The highlight of the home is the dramatic, slanting roof. More than just a design choice, it acts as a giant canopy, keeping the interiors cool and creating a beautiful dance of shadows that changes with the Bangalore sun.

How the design works:

Simple Lines: From the sharp triangle of the roof to the custom-made mesh gates, every line is connected. It creates a sense of calm and rhythm as you walk in.

Natural Materials: We used the "raw" look of form-finished concrete alongside traditional brick. It’s a mix of the modern and the classic.

Open Spaces: By using double-height ceilings and large glass windows, the staircase isn't just a way to go upstairs—it becomes a gallery of natural light.

Architecture is about more than just walls; it’s about how a space makes you feel. This home is our attempt to balance innovation with a design that feels like home.
