Treasures of Nature – Bamboo, the bridge across forever!

Right from severing the umbilical cord of a new born to according dignity to the departed; bamboo remains the forever grass. Across the world, the image of a baby panda chewing on a blade of bamboo grass endures. Silently signaling that nature remains the ultimate incubator for survival.

The Japanese extol seven life lessons to be learnt from the bamboo forest which have an universal and timeless appeal.

Bend but don't break: Bamboo is used to construct earthquake resistant homes – something that the world’s strongest cement cannot guarantee. Yet, it itself sways ever so gently with the breeze. A lesson in humility, to be flexible yet firm. To adapt yet be rooted.

What looks weak is strong: Compared to many of its large neighbours in the forest, bamboo may look skinny and fragile but is often the ones to be found standing strong after a typhoon. We should not be judgemental based on the physical looks of someone. The actor with India’s most famous baritone voice once got rejected during a voice audition at AIR.

Be always ready: According to a saying, "The warrior, like bamboo, is ever ready for action." Be prepared, and prepare yourself – in any activity and for any eventuality. The bamboo needs very little processing prior to use, which makes it ready to use in a short span of time.
Unleash your power to spring back: Representing good luck, bamboo is one of the symbols of New Year Celebrations in Japan. The snow covers bamboo all of winter and its weight makes the bamboo bend back. Then the snow begins to fall due to its own weight, and the bamboo snaps up again. Adversity should be used a spring board in real life too.

Find wisdom in emptiness: The saying goes that one cannot fill a cup which is already full. The hollow insides of the bamboo remind us to create space within ourselves receive knowledge for which it is imperative to empty our mind of prejudices, pride and fear.

Commit to (continuous) growth
Express usefulness through simplicity: Aikido master Kensho Furuya says that "The bamboo in its simplicity expresses its usefulness. Man should do the same." Maybe we attach importance to frills in order to make ourselves and others feel that we are worthy of attention and praise, but in fact, it is simplicity that stands out and is more understood. Don’t be afraid to be simple.

WeCommunities is a way of life; a life where thought is in progress and evolving and yet, a place where the heart truly finds its home...

Treasures of Nature

Introduction
Among the abundant variety of trees, there are those without which the survival and evolution of living forms, especially that of mankind, would not have been possible. In an ode to these treasures of nature, WeCommunities dedicates a series of blogs – a series that aligns with WeCommunities’s own philosophy to create, nurture, and sustain – communities and ecology. In this blog, we feature the golden fibre – jute.

Fabric made with it has the luster of silk and the feel of cotton. It is also associated with gunny bags.

Fabric made with it keeps one cool during the season of sweat and warm in the cool climes. It is also used for making door mats.

Presenting the very versatile jute.

Unlike many other traditional plants and trees that enjoy a place in folk lore and poems revering their uses, one does not find much of a mention of jute in Indian classics despite a prolonged digital search. Which is surprising because jute is synonymous with India’s culture. Ethnic communities have used natural processes to remove the fibre from the stem, which have then been processed to make a variety of items intrinsic to daily use.

Over the years, although the range of products from jute has significantly increased in households, offices and in industries, in many ways its time is yet to come.

The ideal ahimsa fabric, jute has been listed by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the United Nations as a future fabric. 100% bio-degradable, cultivating jute in crop rotations enriches the fertility of the soil for the next crop and does not generate toxic gases when burnt.

Hope the golden fibre, which has an immense connect with culture and cultural and ecological sustainability, finds its place under the sun in the very near future.

Let the bees be...

The next time you hear the annoying buzz of a bee, just remember that its actually the music of life playing…as their presence is intrinsically linked to the survival of the human species. And which is why the news about half a billion bees dropping dead in four of Brazil’s Southern States is a death knell of sorts. Sad and alarming.

Reports suggest that the bees, who are vociferous pollinators, contracted a fatal disease whose origin is traced to Fipronil, a pesticide which is also classified as a possible carcinogenic by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It calls for an urgent reversal of practices harmful for bees and other pollinators not just from the perspective of survival of humankind but also to at least now develop compassionate regard for their well-being.

Around half a billion bees died in four of Brazil's southern states in the year's first months. The die-off highlighted questions about the ocean of pesticides used in the country's agriculture and whether chemicals are washing through the human food supply.

The return of the native!

Have you ever wandered into different houses in a village and noticed a typical combination of plants and trees? This combination is a silent testimony to a native wisdom that factored in care, protection and utility – for not just the members in the family, but also for the house and the trees within the premises and around. read on...

The water situation in India is alarming.

It’s not just Chennai, India’s drying lakes crisis has spread far and wide

From Bhopal to Bengaluru and Chennai to the perennially thirsty Marathwada region of Maharashtra, rain-fed lakes are drying up alarmingly fast.
