Nigdi-Kiwale road will cut travel time to expressway.
There is no direct road to connect Pimpri-Chinchwad to the Mumbai-Pune expressway. As a result, commuters take long routes, which is time-consuming and costly.
The expressway begins at Kiwale near Dehu Road while the municipal limits of Pimpri-Chinchwad end at Nigdi. Since there is no road which connects Nigdi to Kiwale, people have to take a longer detour. Not only the residents but transporters also feel the need for a direct road which will reduce the distance by a good 10 km.
At present, there are two ways to reach the expressway: Take the old Pune-Mumbai highway from Nigdi. On reaching Dehu Road, take a turn to Kiwale. This is an internal cantonment road and not very convenient. Further go ahead to Somatne Phata (a distance of 15 kms from Nigdi). From there take the entry road to the expressway. The second option is the Chinchwad-Thergaon-Wakad road. From Wakad one needs to go by the westerly bypass - i.e. the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass - to reach Kiwale.
Both the roads take at least 30 minutes to 45 minutes to reach Kewale from Nigdi. Although a Nigdi-Kiwale road has been proposed in the development plan (DP), the municipal corporation has not started any work yet.
The absence of a shorter road also means extra cost for transporters, most of whom have their offices in the Transport Nagari at Nigdi. "Around 700 to 800 transport vehicles from Pimpri-Chinchwad use the expressway every day. They pass through Dehu Road cantonment limits where they have to pay vehicle entry fees and then go to Somatne Phata to reach the expressway. We have made representations to the chief minister, who also holds the charge of transport ministry, to make available an entry/exit point for vehicles entering the expressway in Pimpri Chinchwad township. We have also extended this demand to the Union transport ministry."
As per the 2011 census, the population of Pimpri-Chinchwad town is around 17 lakh. The Pune-Mumbai, Pune-Nashik and Pune-Bangalore highways cut through the twin township. There are 2,969 industries and 4,076 commercial establishments here which increases movement of heavy vehicles.
Municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma said a budgetary provision for the Nigdi-Kiwale road will be made next year.
Dilip Kudale, co-ordinator, engineering department, PCMC said, "The corporation proposes to construct a 45-meter wide road from the Bhakti Shakti chowk at Nigdi to Kiwale. The length of this road will be 5.6 kms." This effectively means the distance to Kiwale will be cut down by 10 kms.
"A railway over bridge (ROB) will have to be constructed on the Pune-Lonavla railway tracks for which we need to make an application to the railways," said Kudale.
Once completed, the road will link the Westerly bypass to the Pune-Nashik highway as well. Vehicles coming from the bypass will use this road from Kiwale to reach Bhakti Shakti chowk and then proceed to the Spine road to reach the Pune-Nashik highway.
Apart from Many others reasons kiwale is sound option to go as it provides smooth n hassle free connectivity from all sides.
