For Bhils, painting is a form of prayer and healing. Their murals are considered offerings to the gods and goddesses that they worship. The us of dots are a distinct identity of Bhil art and are layered with symbolism. Of the many stories connected to the use of dots, one is that they believe each dot in a piece is representative of an ancestor.

Sita Meda is from Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh. Her abstract renditions using repetitive mark making are metaphorical depictions of being in a meditative state of being.

Ann Dai is the goddess of agriculture in the Gond community. Farmers pray to Ann Dai for cereals, who they believe blesses them with grain and good harvest for nourishment.

She is depicted here with four heads and two arms, one carrying rice, kutki (herb) while the other carries nutrient rich millet or kado that are grown in Dindhori, Madhya Pradesh.

This interpretation of the agriculture goddess of the Gond tribe is rendered by Suresh Dhurve.

The painting of the cosmos is by Bhil artist Geeta Bhairya, who is from a village in Bhopal. Her abstract rendition of being in a meditative state of being are characterised by the use of repetitive markings.

For Bhils, painting is a form of prayer and healing- their murals are considered to be offerings to the gods and goddesses that they worship. Dots are a distinct identity of Bhil art and have multiple layers of symbolism. One of the many stories behind the use of the same, is their belief that each dot in a piece is representative of an ancestor. Of late, Bhils have begun to introduce modern elements into their cast of characters, making it an honest depiction of life around them.

Please join us for the preview of Gods of the Green Mountains TOMORROW, 28th of October, 2-7pm at The Biv.

For sales and information, please DM us.
