Our Last Mile To understand our project, we need to take a closer look at the history of tea in India.

The unique climate of Darjeeling and the slopes of the hills make it especially conductive to the growing of tea, a characteristic that was discovered by the British during colonial rule. Thus, in the 1800s, tea estates were established by the British in Darjeeling, India with a particularly unique hierarchical structure that continues to date. At almost every tea estate in India, the chief functi

onary at the estate is the Manager who controls the estate in a rigid hierarchy. Over the years, this structure has led to a concentration of decision-making power and restricted upward social mobility for the small farmers and planters. The local communities that form the largest chunk of the plantation have no say in most day-to-day decisions. Through Our Last Mile, we are attempting to bring changes to this structure - an effort that continues the legacy of a legendary planter from the Samabeong Tea Estate. Since the mid-1980s, the Samabeong Estate has led the charge for decentralizing power, involving the local community in decision-making processes of the estate, and creating a more balanced and harmonious ecosystem. Today, with an intent to preserve these efforts Samabeong has opened its doors for ecotourism - an important step for separating business from the community development. Our Last Mile is a social enterprise that works with the Samabeong Tea Estate to promote the local community and small farmers rights with the support of ecotourism revenues.

We are proud to announce our new name and look as part of the ongoing evolution of our company’s brand identity.
Our Last Mile, our heritage home in the hills, has grown and evolved over the years, and we felt it was time for a change. We have refreshed our logo to reflect who we are today and to symbolise our future. We felt the need to have a visual change that reflects our brand values of sustainability, conscious conservation of mother nature, and preservation of 150 years of darjeeling’s tea culture and heritage.
Introducing Tea Forest Experiences, a hospitality brand offering invigorating holiday experiences in our lush organic tea garden in Samabeong, Darjeeling. Samabeong is home to a diverse range of native and migratory Himalayan birds. We are surrounded by the dense Neora Valley forests which is also home to the famous Himalayan Red Panda and Bengal Tigers. Set out on a quiet nature walk to spot the Himalayan Bulbul, go on a bicycle tour of the tea garden, Enjoy a picnic by the river, hike up to the Neora Valley Forests, wake up to the sweet call of the red crimson sunbirds and if you're lucky, maybe even spot the shy Himalayan Red Panda or Bengal Tiger.

Our endeavour is to curate and craft authentic holiday experiences for travellers who wish to seek a deeper connection with nature and and experience Darjeeling’s tea culture, history and community. As part of our package we offer nature walks, tea plucking and tea tasting classes, tea factory tours, trekking, mountain biking in addition to organic wholesome meals.

With this new milestone, we aim to present ourselves better and offer better services in times to come.
