Prof. Jayasekhar, an International astrologer shares his wisdom on Roof concreting:
Normally a muhurtha is not necessary for the roof concreting.

In olden days the Three Longitudinal Wooden bars for the support of the roof were laid. This certainly was important. In my lectures in the west I described this as the Vertebrae of the House and explained its importance.

So a Subha Dina was fixed for it. The chief Carpenter would hoist it. In the center they would put Turmeric, Kumkum and tie Mango leaves. They would break a coconut and place it there. The landlord would present Clothes to the Chief Carpenter and these would also be placed there. Karpoor would be shown.

However today we lay a flat roof consisting of Iron, cement concrete and the whole concept does not exist. So it would be

a superficial observation of tradition, like may other things we do in modern times.

Vaasthu
Vaasthu is he science that explains how best to utilize natures subtle energies that pervade the earth, which are energies of space, planets and particularly the Sun and the aura of mother earth. As interest in Vaasthu increased pseudo practitioners and, half knowledge people have created rules of their own some of which are scaring for the common man. These rules spread by word of mouth and people begin to believe them as though they are genuine. To set the record straight I give some basic rules:
Site: A rectangular site is best. A square is the net best. Irregular shapes need to be modified suitably to overcome the problems. A circular plot is not at all recommended for human habitation. The site should slope from the south to North if it is North South long plot. If East West, it should slope towards the East.
Compound Wall: It is necessary to raise a wall around your plot. Once there is a compound wall the energies in your site and house are not affected by the energies in the neighborhood beyond your compound wall.
However there should not be any marshy land, deep pit, or cemetery adjoining your compound wall. Outside your compound here should not be a Tall tree, a temple Gopura in particular or a mountain whose shadow falls exactly on your Main Entrance.

Site facing direction: Generally a site is said to be facing a direction because there is a road on that side. And use expressions such as east facing plot or south facing plot. This is not correct. A road can be on any side of the plot. Every plot has four facings. It is the house that is built in the plot that faces a certain direction not the plot itself.

Vaasthu has given rules for the main entrance door of a house facing a direction. The entrance of a house could face East, North, South or West. That is the preferable order. A house can be built in any plot so that the entrance of the house faces a preferable direction. For example if a house is built in a plot which has the road on the south, it is possible to have the entrance on the east. People enter the compound from the road which is on the south and enter the house from the east where the main entrance is located.

No doubt if the road is on the east of the Plot, the main entrance can face the road. If the road is on the north the main entrance can face the north. If the road is on the South or West, it is necessary to have a plan that enables the entrance to be towards the North, East or South.

We should realize that the direction of the road to the plot is not as important as the direction in which the main entrance faces; It is only that if the road is on the east or North, the building plan with the Main entrance facing the road is easily drawn. That does not mean the plots having roads on the other two directions have to be discarded.
Besides though East side road with the Main entrance facing the East may be considered the ideal, it may not be so for every individual. Just as Sugar is unsuitable for the diabetic, it may be necessary for a person suffering from Hypoglycemia to take a spoon of Glucose or eat a chocolate as soon as he begins to feel dizzy. Similarly a particular direction may be suitable for a particular individual even though not suitable for others.
Persons born in certain Rasi and certain Nakshatras will find South or West much more suitable for them than East and North.! A competent astrologer could go through the chart of a person and advise as to the most suitable direction in which the main entrance of a house should be.
It is not sufficient if the direction is proper. The location of the main entrance in that side of the house - Known as the SIMHA DWARA (Lion Entrance) is most important. All positive energy-commonly called as Lakshmi enters the house through that Main Entrance.
Divide the house length in the direction in which you decide to place the main entrance into nine equal parts. Facing that direction consider the first part as ruled by the energies of Sun and the successive parts by Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Sukra , Sani, Rahu and Ketu.
In general the entrance door placed in the area of Mercury or Jupiter brings a lot of material gain and success. Here again the Astrologer is the best to suggest which part is best suited for a particular individual based on his birth Chart, Lagna, Janma Nakshatra and other indications.
Besides the rules vary according to the purpose for which the premises will be used. A habitat for a family has special rules. A premises built to have a clinic, a beauty salon, a laundry, a vegetable shop, a restaurant- all have separate rules, depending on which side the road is and who is the owner..
There is no such thing as ‘One size fits all” in Vaasthu

Vasthu Purana.
Andhakssura was an invincible evil demon who was destroying the world. On the request of all the gods, Parama Siva, who was the only one capable of destroying him started fighting him. It was a terrible, fierce battle. Lord Siva was burning with anger and also perspiring profusely. The water drops fell on the earth. A Draculla like dark toothed demon sprang out where the water and earth joined as though a seed was planted there. The demon began to grow in size and occupied the space between earth and the skies.
Indra and other gods ran to Lord Brahma and implored him to save them from this Demon who was indeed created by him, the Creator. Lord Brahma advised them to unite and attack and subdue the demon.
The gods 25 of them jointly held the demon and flung him face down on to the earth. When he was flat on the earth with his head to the North East, feet to the South West and elbows to the North West and South East, they jumped on him and each of the gods sat on him all over all over his body so that he could not rise or even move.
The vanquished demon then began to pray to Lord Brahma for giving him such a miserable life and implored him to show pity. His devotion was sincere and prayer intense. Lord Brahma was moved and said “What has already been done at my command cannot be undone. You would be confined to the Earth. However you will be called “Vasthu Purusha” - Earthman (like Batman, Superman or Pokeman!). I give you a boon. Whenever humans make a construction on earth they would worship you and the gods that rule the eight directions of the Earth, Dik Palakas. The rituals would sanctify the place and make it prosperous. I also give you the freedom of movement. You will move in a clock wise direction according to the movement of Aditya (Sun God) through the twelve Rasis. You would be Chara Vasthu Purusha, (rotating Earthman)
To perform the Bhoomi Pooja, generally a Muhurtha is fixed. Muhurtha Chintamani, Muhurtha Marthanda, Muhurtha Pradarsini, Muhurtha Darpani, Muhurtha Deepika, Brihat Samhita, Kaalaprakasika, Utthara Kaalamritha, Jaatakadesa Marga are some of the classics that give the rules for fixing Muhurtha for various events and occasions.
To my knowledge in none of these there is a mention that Bhoomi Puja Muhurtha could be done on the day related to the activities of Vasthu Purusha.
After nearly a thousand years of attempts to destroy the ancient culture and wisdom of Bharat by marauders and colonialists, Gurukulas and Learned Gurus with true knowledge of the Shastras have disappeared. Consequently people depend upon hearsay or blindly follow something because someone else has done so. Thus two types of pseudo Shastras, in place of the genuine have emerged. Anukoola Shasthras and Ahankaara Shasthras. In the first everything is adjusted according to our convenience. In the later someone who earns the respect and attention of others, for his or her own Ego announces a procedure.
If one desires to follow the Shasthras, it is necessary to find the procedures as mentioned by ancient sages in the Shastras.
