Same site. Same design. Same earthquake zone.
Three ways to build on this slope:
A: Cut deep into the hill, pour retaining walls, and build a heavy RCC frame on top
B: Load-bearing brick on a stone plinth
C: A light steel frame on a few footings, with the hillside left largely undisturbed
In hill construction, the site sets the rules. Excavation volume, slope stability, the building's weight in a seismic event, material transport up ghat roads, and a short dry building season all affect which system makes sense.
So which would you choose, and why?
We'd especially like to hear from structural engineers, architects and contractors who have built in the Himalayas or Northeast India. Share your reasoning in the comments. We'll post our take in 48 hours.
