The Central Government has officially cleared the proposal to expand the HyderabadβVijayawada National Highway (NH-65) from four to six lanes, marking one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in recent years. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a notification confirming that the widening will cover 229 km, stretching from the 40 km to the 269 km mark on NH-65.
This long-pending approval comes after persistent efforts by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who has been pursuing the project for the past two years to ease traffic congestion and improve safety on this crucial high-density inter-state corridor.
β
Faster, Safer & Smarter Connectivity
With the six-lane expansion, travel time between Hyderabad and Vijayawada is expected to reduce by nearly two hours, while traffic congestion and accident risk will drop significantly. The project includes plans for a high-security smart highway, featuring advanced infrastructure, upgraded junctions, service roads, vehicular underpasses, flyovers, and bridges.
The βΉ10,391.53-crore project will not only improve long-distance travel, but also strengthen logistics, trade, and industrial movement between both statesβbenefiting cargo transport, tourism, and daily commuters.
β
Land Acquisition Underway
The Centre has appointed officials in both states to oversee land acquisition. In Telangana, Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs) are already executing the process across key districts:
YadadriβBhuvanagiri: 9 villages in Choutuppal
Nalgonda: Villages across Chityal, Narketpally, Kattangur, Nakrekal, Kethepally
Suryapet: Villages in Suryapet, Chivvemla, Kodad, Munagala
β
Safer Roads With Black Spot Removal
Roads & Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy announced that authorities have identified 17 accident-prone black spots. Work worth βΉ325 crore is underway to correct these stretches with new infrastructure upgrades, ensuring safer travel for lakhs of daily commuters.
β
Urban Traffic Easing
Urban stretches are also being redesigned. Proposals are being finalised for an 8-lane double-decker elevated corridor over a 5.5 km stretch between L.B. Nagar and Hayathnagar, aiming to decongest Hyderabadβs busiest entry point.
Once completed, the six-lane expansion will create a fast, safe and smart express corridor between the two Telugu states β elevating road standards, enabling faster movement of goods, boosting regional trade, and supporting rapid economic growth.
