Gaon Bura of Akuk Village

Naga Hills Desk | April 16
British anthropologist and agricultural officer Charles Robert Stonor took this photo of the Gaon Bura of Akuk village, presently in Wokha district, just months before India's independence. The Gaon Bura was a critical administrative figure established during British rule to act as a bridge between the government and the village, managing customary laws and tax collection.

Stonor worked in the Naga Hills between 1946 and 1948, a period during which he extensively documented the cultural life, social structures, and agricultural practices of various Naga tribes, including the Lotha Nagas.
His photographic collection is considered an invaluable ethnographic record of an era just before significant modern changes reached the Naga Hills. His work focused on preserving rare glimpses of Naga heritage. Much of his work, including his extensive photo collection and field notes, is now preserved in the Pitt Rivers Museum at Oxford......

Vividly clear, profound memories, intense work, euphoric excitement- unlike 21st Century; Particularly ChatGPT and AI with no or less elation.

Let’s reckon from this year 2026 January minus to 25 years and down (And particularly mine)... In some of the Naga’s villages, electricity was out of question. Road was not built (They travel on foot all day long-for education, business office purpose and such like). Candle, antique lamp light and petromax lamp were extra ordinary for a pauper to purchase them. What’s abundant is/was pine wood. This pine- 🌲fatwood was the only solution to modern bulb 💡

To pass the examination, you need to burn 🔥 the pine fatwood and sacrifice the night. Interestingly, parents were not content to send children to school, their only blissful was when children assist them in the paddyfield. Here, much delight was seen on parents’ visages.

Time may forget, therefore, evidence became imperative to announce the world, that, this bosti (village tale) existed; where studying was bored, yet, games were priced; road was absent, but, distant walk was much valued.

Before bosti (village tale) gets distorted, may this short vid. stand as a testimony for the populace to consume as verifiable item.
