🏔️ A Rare Piece of Mountaineering History from the Silent Wish Collection
Presented here is a special “Everest 1953–2003” First Day Cover bearing the signature of Sir Edmund Hillary. Issued on 29 April 2003 as part of Royal Mail’s Extreme Endeavours collection, it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 20 July 1919, Sir Edmund Percival Hillary was a mountaineer, explorer and humanitarian. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and the legendary Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were members of the British expedition led by Colonel John Hunt. Te Ara biography
Their historic success was not merely an individual achievement—it represented courage, trust, teamwork and extraordinary human endurance. Hillary was knighted shortly after the expedition and later participated in major Antarctic exploration.
Beyond mountaineering, Hillary devoted much of his life to the people of Nepal. Through the Himalayan Trust, he supported the development of schools, hospitals, bridges and other essential facilities in remote Himalayan communities. His humanitarian legacy became as important as his historic achievement on Everest.
Sir Edmund Hillary passed away on 11 January 2008, aged 88, but his name continues to symbolize exploration, humility and service to humanity.
This signed commemorative cover is therefore more than a philatelic collectible—it is a tangible connection to one of the greatest adventures in human history.
