Vat dyes are insoluble in water. There are many ways of dyeing for vat dyes viz.

Before dying they need to be reduced and solubilized by reductive agent in alkaline solution, then dyeing. They are brilliant in shades, full range in colors and of good dyeing fastness properties on fibers. They also have good leveling, dispersing property and high affinity for cellulosic fibers.
