Most people can't point to Umrangso on a map. That's kind of the point.

It's a small town in Assam, right on the Meghalaya border. A few hours from Guwahati by road. The lake here isn't natural, it came up when the Kopili Hydro Project dammed the river decades ago. Today it's one of the most peaceful stretches of water in the Northeast, hills all around, an 18-hole natural golf course on the bank, and in winter, thousands of Amur Falcons stop here on their migration from Siberia all the way to South Africa. Yes, really.

Our host has been here through all of it. Watched the reservoir fill up. Watched the falcons come back every single year. Watched almost no outsiders find this place, until now.
