Maa Katyayani is one of the nine forms of the Hindu goddess Durga, worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri. She is a fierce and powerful form of Shakti, symbolizing courage, righteousness, and the destroyer of evil.
According to Hindu mythology, Rishi Katyayan, a great sage, performed intense penance to have the goddess as his daughter. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess took birth in his home as Katyayani. Hence, she is known as Maa Katyayani.
She is most famously known for killing the demon Mahishasura, who had become a threat to the heavens. The gods created her by combining their divine energies to defeat him, making her one of the most formidable manifestations of Durga.
Iconography:
She rides a lion, representing courage and power.
She has four hands – usually holding a sword and lotus, while the other two hands show gestures of blessing and protection.
Her form is radiant and divine, inspiring strength and fearlessness.
Symbolism & Devotion:
Maa Katyayani represents the warrior aspect of the divine feminine.
She blesses her devotees with strength, victory, and protection from evil.
In some traditions, young girls pray to her for a good life partner (especially during Katyayani Vrat in some regions).
Navratri Significance:
On the sixth day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Katyayani with great devotion to seek her blessings for courage, clarity, and protection from negative forces.
