The board is authorized to revise the tax once every three years.

Pune Cantonment Board hikes residential, commercial property tax by 5% and 10%PUNE: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has hiked the property tax of residential and commercial properties by around 5% and 10% respectively.

The board is authorized to revise the tax once every three years. The last revision was carried out in 2014. Ideally, the PCB ought to have revised the rates in 2017, but it did not do so due to administrative reasons.

The board has sent property tax bills calculating arrears of the last three years (2017-2020) to the property owners. Notices have also been sent to the property owners, seeking their views on the revised bills a few weeks ago.

“We have so far received around 600 feedbacks from residents. As per the procedure, we have issued a notice regarding a public hearing, which will start from November 15 at the board office,” said chief executive officer (CEO) Amit Kumar, adding that currently, the board earns around Rs 27 crore annually from property tax. The board now expects to earn Rs 30 crore.

“During the hearing, the residents can present their property tax documents and voice their concerns. If there is any miscalculation or error in our records, it will be rectified there itself,” he said.

“Besides, our officials will verify each claim or objection made by an individual before finalizing the rates,” said Kumar. According to board records, there are 11,292 properties in PCM limits.

“During the survey, some violations regarding illegal use of residential spaces for commercial purposes have been noticed by revenue officials. Legal notices have been issued to those indulging in such practices,” said a revenue department official.

“We fail to understand the board’s policy in the last two years as it has increased all types of taxes. It has already increased vehicle entry tax, parking charges and, now, the property tax too,” said Sanjay Kawade, an activist from Ghorpadi.

Lawyer-activist Netraprakash Bhog said that the board does not have a long-term vision. “When the board was earning high taxes in the past, why didn’t it create income-generating sources? Now, it is literally running after the common man and charging money forcefully?” he said.

BMC plans to reward citizens if potholes are not fixed within a day
The BMC has said that it is planning to give a cash prize of Rs 500 to citizens if a pothole reported by them is not repaired within 24 hours
In a move aimed at improving the condition of roads in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to give Rs 500 cash prize to citizens, if a pothole reported by them is not filled within 24 hours by the civic staff, an official said, on October 31, 2019. “To improve the condition of roads in the city, the BMC is planning to hand over a token prize to the complainants, if a pothole reported by them is not filled within 24 hours by the ward officials and civic team. Maintenance of roads is the responsibility of the BMC,” he said. “This prize could be up to Rs 500, but the pothole reported by the citizens has to be at least one foot in length and three inches deep,” the official added.

A number of citizens have been filing complaints about potholes, ever since the BMC launched the MyBMC Pothole Fixit app, nearly a month ago. The app allows users to register pothole-related complaints in all the administrative wards of the BMC.

The Bombay High Court has pulled up the BMC, saying that a ‘high level of tolerance’ displayed by Mumbai residents, has allowed the local civic body to be apathetic towards the poor condition of roads

March 15, 2019: A division bench of the Bombay High Court, of chief justice NH Patil and justice NM Jamdar, on March 14, 2019, expressed displeasure over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ignoring its orders on the issue of potholes and bad condition of roads in the metropolis. The bench noted that to date, the civic body had failed to comply with several court orders on the matter. The court was hearing a bunch of petitions about the increasing number of accidents and deaths of motorists, due to pothole-ridden roads in the city.

“We do not see compliance in major issues,” chief justice Patil said. The authorities seem to have a ‘very insensitive approach’, he said. “Providing good roads to its citizens, is the basic duty and courtesy of the civic body,” he added. The court said the monsoon would soon arrive in the city and before that, the corporation should be ready with its plans for disaster management, drainage systems and other problems encountered during rains.

“It is not that the corporation is not aware of all these issues and what steps should be taken but they (BMC) also know that people here tolerate everything,” Patil observed. “The tolerance level of people in this city is very high. They will tolerate this too,” he added. BMC counsel Anil Sakhare said the corporation had taken several steps, to address the issue of bad roads and potholes. The court later posted the petitions for further hearing next week.
