शिवजी के निराकार स्वरूप के प्रतीक 'लिंग ' शिवरात्रि के दिन महानिशा में प्रकट हुए थे और सबसे पहले ब्रह्मा और विष्णुजी के द्वारा पूजित हुए थे। एवं पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार महाशिवरात्रि शिव और मां पार्वती के मिलन का दिन भी माना जाता है।
देवाधिदेव महादेव की समस्त परिवार के साथ विधिवत पूजा अर्चना एवं रुद्राभिषेक कर उनसे मानवजगत के कल्याण हेतु आशीर्वाद प्राप्त किया।
