They were not born beggars. They had homes. Families. Dignity.

Then came the Bengal Famine.

Food existed. People died.
Not because there was no food. Because they could not reach it.
Many died on the streets without looting. Some could not even bring themselves to beg.
They walked. They waited. They disappeared. Then they died on the pavements of their own cities.

We read these stories. We were speechless. We wept.

1943.
Some died of hunger. Others looked away.
A few writers refused to let those lives disappear into silence.
Writers like Manik Bandyopadhyay, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, and Ramapada Chowdhury preserved the stories of people whose names never made it into history books, but whose lives shaped history itself.

On 5 June, storyteller Shantanil Ganguly will bring those stories to life.
It is an evening of remembrance, reflection, and witness.

Some people kept a key for fifty years.
Not because the door still existed.
But because memory does.
A house lost to Partition.
A return that never happened.
A waiting that outlived hope.
This key is not metal.
It is history held in the palm of those who could never go back.
On 5th June, Gopper Boithok enters one of Bengal’s most painful memories—
stories of loss, displacement, rupture, and survival.
Through the words of Manik Bandopadhyay, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, and Ramapada Chowdhury,
brought alive in the voice of Shantanil Ganguly.

*এবার আর মজা নয়।*

মানিক লিখেছিলেন সেই মানুষদের কথা যারা নদীর পাশে থাকে, তবু নদীই যাদের মৃত্যুর কারণ হয়।

তারাশঙ্কর লিখেছিলেন সেই গ্রামের কথা যেখানে জাত আছে, কিন্তু মানুষ নেই।

নরেন্দ্রনাথ লিখেছিলেন সেই শহরের কথা যেখানে আলো জ্বলে, তবু ভেতরে অন্ধকার।

১৯৩০ থেকে ১৯৬০—বাংলার ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে কঠিন সময়।

দুর্ভিক্ষ।
দাঙ্গা।
যুদ্ধ।
দেশভাগ।
আর এমন এক স্বাধীনতা,
যার ভেতরেও লুকিয়ে ছিল অসংখ্য ক্ষত।

ইতিহাস আমাদের তথ্য দেয়। সাহিত্য সেই তথ্যকে রক্ত-মাংস দেয়।

সেই গল্পগুলোই শুনব আমরা,
৫ই জুন, শান্তনীলদার গলায়।

এবারের গপ্পের বৈঠকে আনন্দের গল্প নেই।
আছে সেইসব গল্প,
যেগুলো না শুনলে আমরা অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যাই।

কারণ জীবন যেমন শুধু আনন্দের নয়,
সাহিত্যও শুধু আনন্দে সত্য হয় না।

যে পাঠক শুধু সুখের গল্প পড়েন, তিনি অর্ধেক পাঠক।

যে শ্রোতা শুধু হাসির গল্প শোনেন, তিনি অর্ধেক শ্রোতা।

এই গল্পগুলো আমাদের নিরাপদ জায়গা থেকে সরিয়ে দেয়।
বাস্তবের মুখোমুখি দাঁড় করায়। আমাদের বদলে দেয়।
