Elevated corridor soon to rid Sohna Road Gurgoan of traffic snarls

The tender has been opened and is expected to be awarded to a company this month; a deadline of 25 months has been fixed for the construction of the 5km elevated corridor

Construction of the 5km elevated corridor on the congested Sohna Road is expected to start soon, as the tender has been opened and is expected to be awarded to a company this month.
The corridor will start a few metres away from Subhash Chowk and end near the Badshahpur village after crossing the heavily congested Vatika Chowk on Golf Course Extension Road.
According to official sources, in the tender finalised on March 1, a deadline of 25 months has been fixed for construction of the corridor along with an underpass at Subhash Chowk.
Haryana public works department (PWD) minster and MLA from Badhshapur, Rao Narbir Singh, said that he expects the work to be completed in 15 months.
“The tender has been finalised for the elevated corridor on Sohna Road and deadline of 25 months has been fixed for completion of the project. But, I believe that the work will be completed in 15 months,” Singh said. He said that he hopes that the project would free Sohna road from traffic congestion.
The immediate and maximum benefit of the corridor will be for the local traffic, which comprises those from several residential and commercial establishments along the Sohna Road.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had in July last year sent the detailed project report (DPR) of the corridor to the Union ministry of road, transport and highways for approval.

According to officials, it will be the second longest elevated corridor in the state following 10-km long Panipat elevated corridor.

“The corridor will be 5 kilometre long. Tenders have been received and are likely to be awarded shortly,” said Ashok Kumar Sharma, NHAI project director, Gurgaon. Sharma said that it might take six months for construction to start at the ground level. He said the total cost of the project is around ₹1,800 crore.

Officials in the office of the PWD minister, however, said that the construction is expected to resume by next month as all formalities have been completed. They said that the corridor is the need of the hour, as it could put an end to snarls on the busy Sohna Road.

The PWD had transferred custody of Sohna Road to the NHAI around two years ago for better maintenance.
The road, now known as NH-248, starts from Rajiv Chowk (NH-48) and leads to Alwar via Sohna Road Gurgoan and Nuh in Mewat.

A large number of commercial establishments, including hotels, restaurants, pub bars and several offices are located along the Sohna Road, besides residential complexes such as Vatika City, Uniworld Gardens 2, Nirvana Country, Parsvanath Green Ville and Malibu Towne leading to heavy traffic on the stretch.

“Rapid urbanisation between Sohna and Gurgaon has led to congestion on this stretch. The corridor is important as it will connect new and developing areas in the south of Gurgaon, which is also a gateway to the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway,” Raman Malik, a resident of South City 2 and a political leader, said.

The tender has been opened and is expected to be awarded to a company this month; a deadline of 25 months has been fixed for the construction of the 5km elevated corridor

Gurgaon: Road linking NH-8 to SPR soon, says Huda

Huda said it has sent proposal for construction of the road that could help vehicles bypass Kherki Daula toll plaza

Work on a bypass road that will link Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and National Highway (NH) 8, nearly 500 metres from the Kherki Daula toll plaza towards Manesar, will start soon, officials of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) said on Tuesday.

The three kilometre stretch is expected to bring relief to commuters and help avoid the toll and perennial traffic jams at Kherki Daula between Gurgaon and Manesar.

“We hope construction of the road will begin soon. Estimates have been sent to the headquarters in Chandigarh for approval. As soon as we get the nod, we will hand over the work to the developers concerned,” said Yashpal Yadav, Huda administrator.

The road is to connect Vatika Chowk on SPR near Rambir Ki Dhani at Sector 69/70 with NH-8 after Kherki Daula toll.

The Manesar-bound traffic on NH-8 would also be benefitted, apart from areas of Sohna and Golf Course Road.

SPR starts from Gurgaon-Faridabad Road near Ghata village in Sector 55 and ends at NH-8, nearly a kilometre from the Kherki Daula toll plaza towards Hero Honda Chowk.

Once the road is complete, commuters on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway will be able to take a left on the SPR and travel a kilometre and take a right again to reach NH-8.

Similarly, SPR commuters coming from the direction of sectors 55-75, Faridabad or Badshahpur and moving to Manesar and ahead will be able to take a left near Sector 75 and reach NH-8, some 500 metres away from the toll plaza.

For homebuyers who booked their flats and plots in sectors along SPR, the bypass road will bring a big relief.

Residents living in sectors and private colonies along Sohna Road who had to travel to NH-8 to cross the toll to reach Manesar will also benefit.

Neeraj Yadav, a resident of South City-2, said, “The new link road or bypass would be a great relief for us. We will be able to take this link to escape the traffic jams at Kherki Daula. We hope Huda completes the construction at earliest,” Yadav said.

The Kherki Daula toll plaza is a traffic bottleneck between Gurgaon and Manesar and the district administration had been looking for at an alternative route for commuters.

Rao Narbir, MLA Badshahpur, said, “This link road will expedite development in sectors 70-80 and it will ease the traffic in the area.”

Gurgaon: Residents irked with illegal parking on Sohna Road service lane

Residents say visitors to nearby shops park their vehicles on the service lane of Sonha Road in a manner as to block passage of commuters

Hundreds of residents commuting on the service lane of Sohna Road are having a tough time navigating, with vehicles parked illegally blocking passage. The vehicles impeding commuters include both two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

Commuters said shopkeepers and visitors randomly park their vehicles on the lane, leading to traffic congestion.

Though the civic authorities recently claimed to have removed all encroachments on the busy stretch, illegal parking continues to be a headache for commuters and residents.

The stretch between Subhas Chowk and Vatika Crossing remains choked with traffic, especially during peak commuting hours. Commuters said though the traffic police and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials are often seen towing away vehicles encroaching the space and even write tickets to violators, it clearly hasn’t had the desired effect.

“It gets difficult to move the car from the service lane during peak hours. Those visiting the shops nearby park their cars in such a manner that it is a challenge for commuters ton find smooth passage,” Vidhya Singh, a regular commuter on the lane, said.

Most commuters take the service lane in a bid to avoid heavy traffic on the Sohna Road.

“The visitors have taken over the service lane and vendors set their chairs out encroaching on the lane and blocking passage for commuters. People visiting the shops leave no space for commuters and unauthorised parking leads to congestion on daily basis,” Archana Gupta, a resident of Central Park-2, said.

The commuters alleged that the authorities are not doing anything to check this menace.

“The situation is visible to all the authorities and has been causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters and residents”, said Nirlept Singh, president, RWA, Uniworld Gardens-1.

Adding to the chaos is wrong side driving, said another commuter.

The traffic officers said they are regularly conducting drives to unclog the stretch. “We have been writing tickets for wrong side parking and will ensure all encroachments are removed at the earliest,” DCP(Traffic), Balbir Singh, said.

Gurgaon: New route to unclog Iffco Chowk jams MG Road

The traffic police’s attempt to unclog Iffco Chowk by creating a new right turn on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road for vehicles from the metro station road has backfired and added to commuters’ woes.

Three days ago,the traffic police removed a section of dividers on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road, 500 metres ahead of Iffco Chowk, to provide an alternative shorter route for traffic from Iffco Chowk metro station towards New Delhi on MG Road.

The idea was that commuters can directly take a right turn towards New Delhi on the MG Road instead of taking a left turn towards Iffco Chowk followed by a U-turn at the intersection for heading towards the national capital.

However, the newly ‘opened space’ has created a bottleneck on the MG Road, and even causing accidents.

Siddhant Chawla of Heritage City said the travel time from the expressway to his residence remains the same.

“Instead of traffic being jammed at Iffco Chowk, there are snarls on the MG Road at the new right turn spot. The move by traffic police is pointless. It still takes me 10 to 15 minutes to reach home from Iffco Chowk,” Siddhant said.

With a new option available, those travelling from New Delhi on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway are opting to take the service lanes to enter MG Road and then take a right turn using the newly created space to head towards Iffco Chowk metro station.

Earlier, commuters used to either opt for exit 7 at Signature Towers on the expressway to head towards Iffco Chowk Metro station and nearby areas or take a U-turn before the MG Road Metro station.

Several accidents have been reported at the spot as commuters coming towards Iffco Chowk on MG Road are colliding with traffic from Iffco Chowk Metro station road.

When HT visited the spot, a taxi coming from Iffco Chowk metro station, trying to use the right turn, and a motorcycle heading towards Iffco Chowk on MG Road collided.

Police said there is no immediate solution to the chaos.

“The space was created to unclog traffic at Iffco Chowk and it has been successful from that perspective. Soon, we will deploy traffic personnel at the spot (the new right turn) or set up a traffic light there to solve the traffic crisis,” a police spokesperson said.

Gurgaon: Highways authority to construct 16-km elevated corridor on Sohna Road

Travelling between Gurgaon and Alwar in Rajasthan via Nuh in Mewat on Sohna Road is set to become smooth as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is mulling to revise an old plan of constructing a 5.5-km elevated corridor and extending it to 16.5 km.

The road from Rajiv Chowk to Sohna, popularly known as Sohna Road, is now National Highway 248 and it extends till Alwar in Rajasthan.

“The detailed project report (DPR) on the 5.5-km road was almost ready as work on it was underway for the last six months. Now, the NHAI is thinking of extending the elevated corridor plan to 16.5 km but a final decision is yet to be taken,” an NHAI official said. The entire project, including construction of the elevated road and road widening till Alwar, would roughly cost Rs 1100 crore, the official said.

The official said land would be acquired for the entire project from 54 villages between Gurgaon and Alwar districts.

Currently, commuters travelling from Delhi and wanting to go to Nuh and Alwar turn left at Rajiv Chowk on NH-8 and struggle to make their way through the congestion on Sohna Road via Subhash Chowk, Badshahpur, Bhondsi, Nuh and further.

The NHAI, as soon as it took over the road from the public works department (PWD) in 2015, had planned the construction of an elevated corridor along Badshahpur and Bhondsi villages that are outside Gurgaon’s urban areas.

The traffic movement on Sohna Road increased manifold over the years and hence the Haryana Urban Development Authority transferred it to the PWD in 2012. Later, NHAI took over the road.

However, the flyover at Subhash Chowk for vehicles from Huda City Centre to Hero Honda Chowk cutting across Sohna would cause inconvenience to the highways authority during the construction of the elevated corridor.

Ramesh Singh of Badshahpur said, “The elevated corridor would bring relief to local residents and it should come at earliest as Sohna Road has become accident prone after it was declared a national highway. The volume of traffic has also increased manifold.”
