What is SKIFT Ultrafiltration (UF)?

SKIFT Ultra-filtration (UF) does separation process using membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.001 micron. Typically, SKIFT UF membranes will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules. Low molecular-weight organics and ions such as sodium, calcium, magnesium chloride, and sulphate are not removed by SKIFT UF Membranes. Because only high-molecular weight species are removed, the osmotic pressure differential across the SKIFT UF Membrane surface is negligible. Low applied pressures are therefore sufficient to achieve high flux rates from an SKIFT Ultra-filtration membrane. Flux of a membrane is defined as the amount of permeate produced per unit area of membrane surface per unit time. Generally flux is expressed as gallons per square foot per day (GFD) or as cubic meters per square meters per day.
SKIFT Ultra-filtration UF membranes can have extremely high fluxes but in most practical applications the flux varies between 50 and 200 GFD at an operating pressure of about 50 psi in contrast, SKIFT Reverse osmosis membranes only produce between 10 to 30 GFD at 200 to 400 psi.

Kerala has the highest chemical/bacterial contaminated drinking water among 28 tested States in the country, according to the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the State’s Economic Review for 2011-2012 has stated.
Out of the total 1,02,900 tested sources in the State, nearly 34 per cent had been identified with contamination of iron, fluoride, salinity, nitrate, arsenic and other bacteria with Kozhikode district having the most contaminated water in the State.
Out of 10803 tested sources, 54 per cent were found to be contaminated there while Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Kasaragod, Ernakulam and Palakkad being the other vulnerable districts in terms of access to safe drinking water in the State.
The Review, which states that there was a mistaken notion that Kerala was abundant in water resources, points out that despite the southwest and north east monsoons, there was a large spatial and temporal variation in the rainfall system and the abundance of water resources in one season led to shortage in the next season. Rapid urbanization, increased economic activity, population explosion and changes in land use pattern among others were widening the gap between the demand for and the supply of water.

"FACTS ABOUT DRINKING PURIFIED WATER"

What do people drink?

Water is the universal solvent. But it is much more than that. Water is the most important nutrient for our bodies. It is involved in every function in the body, yet people give their houseplants better water than they drink themselves or give to their children. Many people don’t drink water. Some don’t like the taste of water or were never taught how important it is. They were brought up on juice, cool drinks, milk, or anything else but water. Adults often suffer from headaches, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, limited concentration capabilities, wrinkled skin, constipation, gout and kidney stones, caused by i.a. dehydration! Children continue with this habit when they are adults. When they are thirsty, they drink tea, coffee, fruit juices, iced tea – caffeine and sugar!

Why drink water?

Water is a compound of two elements: oxygen and hydrogen. The specific property of water makes it the ideal solvent for all the chemical substances for the body’s processes. Sufficient water of a good quality is necessary for optimal functioning of the whole body – from the brain to the toe nails! In his book The Seven Pillars of Health Dr Don Colbert describes how doctors prescribe medicines for conditions caused by dehydration. Instead of drinking water patients drink medicine!

Dr Christiaan quotes a study done by the University of the Witwatersrand in his book Gesond vir ‘n Leeftyd, where the importance for children to drink clean water is emphasized. The study suggests that a child should drink two glasses of water per day, plus one glass for every 10kg he or she weighs.
Because they are growing, children are constantly and naturally dehydrated. The process of cell expansion and division uses up a great deal of water. The body of a growing child constantly needs and calls for water; otherwise growth would not be possible, says Dr Batmanghelidj in his book with the significant title You’re not Sick, You’re Thirsty! He continues: If the natural calls of the body for water are satisfied by manufactured chemical-containing fluids and sugar-containing drinks, healthy growth and development – events that water itself initiates – may not take place efficiently, and crisis events such as asthma and allergies may occur.
Parents should become aware of the volume of water their children drink and educate them about the importance of water. Caffeine in cool drinks may cause attention deficit disorder. Water by itself generates hydroelectric energy. Drinking water with caffeine stimulates the kidneys and causes more water to exit the body causing dehydration and exhausts the brain cells’ reserves of energy.

Do we need to drink the water contains "carcinogens"

Children and adults need to drink water. But the drinking of purified water is more important. Dr Don Colbert warns that we need to drink the right kind of water which tap water is not. A government report in the USA identified more than 2 000 chemical substances in drinking water, according to Dr Colbert. Pesticides, chlorine, fluoride and medicines are all poisons and most of them known carcinogens (cancer forming substances). Dr Christian warns: “Water is water is water” is wrong. The quality of water is very important. It depends on the dissolved and un-dissolved solids in water. Water can also transmit diseases.

To chlorinate potable water is the most effective and inexpensive method of disinfecting water. But, chlorine is also a known poison to the body and for health reasons chlorine must be removed from water before it is consumed. The U.S. Council of Environmental Quality reported that cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is as much as 93% higher than those who do not. Bladder cancer has been associated with exposure to chlorination by-products.

24 Water purification methods

SEPARATION: HEAT, LIGHT & GRAVITY

SEDIMENTATION gravitationally settles heavy suspended material.
BOILING WATER for 15 to 20 minutes kills 99.9% of all living things and vaporizes minimum chemicals. Minerals, metals, solids and the contamination from the cooking container become more concentrated.
DISTILLATION boils and recondenses the water, but many chemicals vaporize and recondense in concentration in the output water. It is also expensive very to boil & cool water.
ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT is a good bactericide, but has no residual kill, and works only in clearly filtered water. Still in its infancy stage and no actions on chemical contaminants.
CHEMICALS

CHLORINE is common, cheap, but extremely toxic. It does not decrease physical or chemical contamination, it does increase cholesterol formations, is a carcinogen, and causes heart disease.
BROMINE, used in pools and spas, doesn't smell or taste as bad and doesn't kill bacteria very well.
IODINE is not practical, and is mostly used by campers.
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE kills bacteria with oxygen, is chemically made and is very toxic. It is used in emergencies.
SILVER is an effective bactericide but a cumulative poison which concentrates and doesn't evaporate.
NONTOXIC ORGANIC ACIDS should be used with caution in large water plants only.
LIME AND MILD ALKALINE AGENTS should also be used with caution only by large water plants, or only for laundry.
NEUTRALIZING CHEMICALS react with the unwanted chemicals and produce outgases and a sediment, but levels of need vary.
COAGULATION-FLOCCULATION adds chemicals which lump together suspended particles for filtration or separation.
ION EXCHANGE exchanges sodium from salt for calcium or magnesium, using either glauconite (greensand), precipitated synthetic organic resins, or gel zeolite, thus softening the water. Minerals, metals, chemicals or odors are not affected, and the water is salty to drink.

FILTRATION

SLOW SAND of 1 cubic meter passes about 2 liters/min, and does a limited bacteria removal.
PRESSURE SAND of 1 cubic meter passes about 40gpm and must be backwashed daily.
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH removes small suspended particles at high flow rates, must be daily backwashed and is expensive.
POROUS STONE/CERAMIC filters are small but expensive, and do not effect chemicals, bacteria or odors.
PAPER or CLOTH filters are disposable and filter to one micron, but do not have much capacity.
CHARCOAL:
-COMPRESSED CHARCOAL/CARBON BLOCK is the best type of charcoal filter, can remove chemicals and lead, but is easily clogged, so should be used with a sediment prefilter.
-GRANULAR CHARCOAL is cheaper, but water can flow around the granules without being treated.
-POWDERED CHARCOAL is a very fine dust useful for spot cleaning larger bodies of water, but is messy and can pass through some filters and be consumed.
REVERSE OSMOSIS uses a membrane with microscopic holes that require high pressure water pumping and very effective filtration method effective in all three types of contamination: physical, chemical and biological.
ENZYMES & BACTERIA combined can remove contaminants and reduce sludge. Its again a complicated and expensive way of purification.

OXYDATION

AERATION sprays water into the air to raise the oxygen content, to break down odours, and to balance the dissolved gases. However, it takes space, is expensive, and picks up contaminants from the air.
OZONE is a very good bactericide, using highly charged oxygen molecules to kill microorganisms on contact, and to ozidize and flocculate iron, manganese and other dissolved minerals for post-filtration and backwashing.
ELECTRONIC PURIFICATION and DISSOLVED OXYGEN GENERATION creates super oxygenated water in a dissolved state that lowers the surface tension of the water and effectively treats all three types of contamination: physical, chemical and biological.
