The idea that humans once possessed illuminating powers or spiritual capabilities gifted by higher beings, like Anu and other gods in ancient mythology, is a powerful theme that has resonated across cultures. In many traditions, these powers represented a higher level of awareness, an ability to connect with universal truths, or a direct understanding of divine knowledge.
In ancient myths, particularly those from Mesopotamia, Anu was the god of the heavens, the one from whom power and wisdom descended. He represented a cosmic order that was, in the mythology, meant to guide humanity. People were seen as created beings who were connected to divine wisdom—a kind of spiritual or illuminating power that transcended physical limitations. This knowledge, however, was believed to require a high level of purity, discipline, and humility to be retained.
According to many ancient cultures, early humans were given this illumination or connection to divine consciousness. But over time, human desires, attachment to material existence, and pursuit of power were thought to have weakened this connection. Rather than aligning with the divine order or higher wisdom, humans increasingly pursued their interests, leading to greed, conflict, and a growing sense of separation from this spiritual awareness.
As society grew more complex, the connection to divine wisdom was diluted. Ancient spiritual practices that helped individuals connect with this awareness became less accessible or even suppressed by emerging social and political powers. In Mesopotamia, Egypt, and other ancient civilizations, priestly classes controlled knowledge, deciding what the public could know. Similarly, in later history, secret societies or orders claimed to guard “forbidden” knowledge or insights meant only for the initiated few. 🔺👁️
