Montecastelli Pisano is a small ancient village in the Cecina Valley, in the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by a wonderful hilly landscape with woods and fields. After decades of decreasing population, in the course of the last years the village has found its own way of developing high quality agriculture (wine, olive oil) and family friendly tourism with small, cozy bed and breakfasts. e and public investments have helped preserve the ancient buildings and the landscape. A luthery for high quality, handmade classical string instruments has also been opened in Montecastelli, as well as a concert hall hosting classical music festivals with internationally famous musicians, as well as neuroscience research meetings with scientists from the University of Harvard. The medieval castle is also being restructured to house a meeting centre for music and neuroscience where young people and scientists from all over the world can meet for courses and masterclasses. Montecastelli has become a place where landscape, history and culture have come to a new life life through the passion and dedication of old and new inhabitants. A place where the beauty of the landscape is joined with hospitality and respect for the environment. Montecastelli could be used as a successful example for many other small villages. But Montecastelli is now facing a danger. Due to the wild liberalization of the energy market in Italy, and taking advantage of an old fascist law, various companies are doing all they can to obtain permissions from the regional and state authorities to seek for geothermic power. The area has become, in a sort of Gold Rush, a territory for making quick money. Using hardly tested and potentially dangerous techniques, they are seeking to transform one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world in a giant laboratory, where the search for energy is only a pretext to get subventions and make money. A large private company has presented a project to the Region Toscana to build a power plant in the immediate vicinity of Montecastelli. This experimental plant will cause noise, traffic, and ruin the landscape. It will have a devastating impact on the natural equilibrium of an uncontaminated area, it will geologically endanger the area and economically damage many people. All the economical, cultural, infrastructural and ethical investments made in the area will be in vain, with no advantage to the local population in terms of jobs and no certainty of any energy gains. It is not right that a few investors' economical profit should damage the whole village and the whole area and all its inhabitants, depriving them of their peace and of any incomes from a clean, sustainable tourism. The landscape must be preserved in everybody's interest. For this reason some inhabitants and friends of Montecastelli have joined in the Committee Montecastelli Viva, to fight together against this economical speculation. The Committee asks the Region Toscana NOT to give permission for the building of the power plant. The landscape must be preserved and the natural environment, which is a sustainable economical resource for the locals, must be protected. Only about a hundred people live in Montecastelli. A number of them is fighting together with other friends of the village abroad to save the village, in everybody's interest. To do this, they need legal assistance, and this costs money. But the Committee, made by simple citizens, does not have enough money to fight a rich private company on a legal basis. By making even a small contribution you can contribute to preserving the nature, culture and beauty of this village, which are everybody's heritage, and not only a tool for the enrichment of a few.We ask you to help us saving the village. Montecastelli Pisano in Val di Cecina, nel cuore della Toscana, è un antico paese circondato di dolci colline, campi e boschi, con un panorama spettacolare. Dopo decenni di spopolamento, nel corso degli ultimi anni questo luogo ha trovato una propria via di sviluppo attraverso una agricoltura di alta qualità (olio, vino) agriturismo a conduzione familiare e strutture turistiche, anche grazie a ingenti investimenti per la riqualificazione urbana e paesaggistica di tutta l'area. Ogni anno, si registrano circa 10 mila presenze nelle strutture ricettive della zona. A Montecastelli è anche sorta una liuteria sperimentale di grande valore e una sala per concerti che ospita festival di musica classica con musicisti di alto livello internazionale come anche convegni di neuroscienze dell’Università di Harvard. Si sta ristrutturando il borgo medievale e creando un centro di musica e neuroscienza che ospiterà giovani musicisti e scienziati di tutto il mondo per corsi di specializzazione e perfezionamento. Montecastelli è diventato un simbolo di come il paesaggio, la storia, la cultura di un luogo possano dar vita, attraverso la cura e la passione di abitanti vecchi e nuovi, a fenomeni di accoglienza, cultura e valorizzazione del territorio nel rispetto dell’ambiente. Montecastelli potrebbe essere un esempio che mostra la strada a molte altre simili realtà italiane. Ma Montecastelli ora è in pericolo. A causa di una vecchia legge fascista, rispolverata nella liberalizzazione selvaggia nel mercato dell’energia in Italia, si è creata in questa zona una situazione da febbre dell’oro, nella quale varie società si affannano ad ottenere dalla Regione e dal Ministero permessi vantaggiosi e lucrativi dietro il paravento della ricerca di energia geotermica. Con tecniche potenzialmente pericolose e non sufficientemente collaudate, senza curarsi delle conseguenze geologiche (sulle quali non si sa abbastanza) e dell’impatto paesaggisticamente devastante. Le zone più belle della Toscana si sono trasformate nel terreno di lotta a chi arriva prima nella gara per i permessi e quindi per le sovvenzioni. Diverse societá private hanno presentato alla Regione Toscana un progetto per la realizzazione, a pochi metri dal centro storico di Montecastelli, di una centrale geotermica sperimentale con profondissimi pozzi di produzione che distruggerebbero irreversibilmente quest’area molto delicata dal punto di vista ecologico, idrico, ambientale ed economico. L’impatto acustico, estetico e ambientale sarebbe devastante. Tutti gli investimenti economici, culturali, infrastrutturali ed etici di moltissimi anni sarebbero vanificati, senza nessun vantaggio in termini di occupazione nè certezza di ricavo energetico. Qualcuno vuole semplicemente guadagnare soldi. Non è giusto, nè per il paese nè per la zona, che interessi economici che vanno esclusivamente a vantaggio di pochi danneggino irreparabilmente quello che negli anni qui tutti hanno costruito. Il territorio dev’essere preservato nell’interesse di tutti. Per questi motivi il Comitato Montecastelli Viva, formato da volontari della zona, sta combattendo una lotta per salvare il paese dalla speculazione. Chiediamo alla Regione Toscana che l’autorizzazione agli impianti venga negata e che il luogo venga protetto per preservare un ambiente che è una enorme risorsa sostenibile per l'economia locale. A Montecastelli vivono un centinaio di persone. Poche decine di amici del paese combattono su base volontaria contro interessi miliardari nell’interesse di tutti. Per far questo occorrono soldi per le spese legali che noi, semplici cittadini e amici di Montecastelli, non abbiamo. Noi non abbiamo le risorse economiche di una potente società privata. Per questo ci serve il tuo aiuto. Con un’offerta anche minima puoi contribuire a salvare un luogo bellissimo dalla speculazione selvaggia, puoi aiutare a preservare la natura, la cultura e la bellezza di questo borgo, che è di tutti e non solo di pochi attori che mirano al guadagno facile.
