🌿 Halfway through Sicily — and the suitcase hasn’t moved.

Our September Hidden Sicily Grand Journey is already halfway through.

The sea, Ragusa and Modica are behind us. Still ahead: Mount Etna, Sicilian w**eries and lunch at Ciccio Sultano’s two-Michelin-starred Il Duomo.

But there is one detail our guests begin to appreciate somewhere around the middle of the week:

the suitcase stays in the same room.

For seven days, our historic Villa Santa Margherita is home. Breakfast at the villa, a day exploring Sicily — and in the evening, we come back home.

No changing hotels. No large tour groups. Never more than eight guests.

What does The Independent say about us?

Yesterday, a family from London arrived at Villa Santa Margherita — parents, children and two weeks at the villa.

At check-in, we asked our usual question:

“How did you find us?”

The father simply held out his phone.

On the screen was an article from The Independent. Villa Santa Margherita had been selected as one of just 12 hotels in Sicily, with a special mention as Best for families.

Almost a year and a half later, a few paragraphs had turned into plane tickets, children’s backpacks and fourteen nights with us.

So we became curious about what everyone else thought.

🍷 The Wines That Rarely Leave Sicily

Nero d'Avola, Grillo and Etna Rosso have long since earned their international reputation.

But the real story of Sicilian w**e begins where the familiar names end.

Carricante from the slopes of Mount Etna offers notes of lemon zest, sea salt and cool volcanic smoke.

Frappato from Vittoria brings wild strawberries, pomegranate, rose petals and white pepper. Together with Nero d'Avola, it creates Cerasuolo di Vittoria — Sicily's only DOCG w**e.

Then come the island's quieter treasures: almond-scented Catarratto, spicy Nerello Cappuccio and the dark, characterful Perricone.

And, of course, Malvasia delle Lipari from the Aeolian Islands — an extraordinary sweet w**e with aromas of dried apricot, orange zest, honey and Mediterranean herbs. One of Italy's most underrated dessert w**es.

🌿 The 2026 season is in full swing at Villa Santa Margherita.

The pool is open.
The gardens are green.
The rooms are ready.
And Sicily is already moving at its most beautiful summer rhythm.

Villa Santa Margherita is not a large hotel.

It is a historic Sicilian estate with only five rooms, surrounded by 11 hectares of olive groves, gardens and countryside, bordering a protected UNESCO nature area.

The villa dates back to the 19th century and was once connected to the estate of Bishop Rosso — a place where olive oil, w**e, land and hospitality were part of daily life.

That spirit is still here.

🚜 While our master tractor driver Paolo expertly weaves his way through the olive groves, preparing the land for the next harvest, Villa Santa Margherita is already filling with the scents of the season.

The lemons glow in the sun 🍋, pomegranates shine among the trees ❤️, and the sea breeze drifts across the hills carrying the fragrance of wild Mediterranean herbs 🌿. Sicily seems to whisper: “Slow down. Breathe. Stay a little longer.”

Between our gastronomic tours, the gardens and vegetable plots continue their quiet rhythm. After all, the best Sicily begins with fertile soil and a deep connection to the land.

Soon, however, the silence will give way to arriving suitcases, shared tables, laughter, and glasses raised to new friendships 🥂.

December brings leisurely walks through magnificent Baroque towns, tastings of exceptional w**es 🍷, artisan cheeses 🧀, and our own St. Margherita DOP BIO olive oil 🌿. Evenings unfold slowly, like scenes from a beautiful Italian film ✨.

🇮🇹🇮🇹 Our autumn tours have come to an end — and once again, Sicily worked its quiet magic.

Wonderful company, long laughter, old w**eries, and generous glasses of w**e shared among new friends 🍷.

In the evenings, Villa Santa Margherita smelled of citrus and olives. Glasses rang, conversations flowed, and life felt exactly as it should: unhurried, full-flavoured, without noise or pretence.

Even the sea refused to say goodbye to summer — our guests swam with the joy of children 🌊.

Now Sicily is waiting for winter.

A season when the island becomes especially beautiful: fewer visitors, soft sun, the scent of freshly baked pastries in the morning, good w**e in the evening, and a quiet sense of celebration in the air.
