As you step into the first courtyard of Palazzo Vecchio, you are greeted by one of Florence’s most charming residents: the Puttino (Little Boy with a Dolphin).

Sculpted by Andrea del Verrocchio around 1470, this playful bronze figure was originally commissioned for a Medici villa before being moved here to crown the beautiful porphyry fountain.

The iconic house towers (torri gentilizie) were the true skyscrapers of the Middle Ages. Originally built for defense and as a symbol of prestige, these stone giants allowed noble families to literally look down on their rivals. At one point, over 150 towers pierced the Florentine skyline!

Today, walking through the Oltrarno and the historic center, you can still find these silent guardians integrated into the city’s fabric.

Porta San Frediano it’s a massive time machine. Built in the 14th century, it remains the most imposing of Florence’s surviving gates because it was meant to guard the vital road leading toward the sea (Pisa and Livorno).

Have you noticed those gigantic wooden doors? They are the originals! 🗝️ Foreigners are often surprised to learn that while most city gates were "lowered" (cut down) in the 1500s to survive new cannon technology, San Frediano kept its towering height.
