Two girls take over the square, balancing on the cast iron posts in front of Palazzo Imperiali.
The stone has stood for centuries. They have not for even a minute.
The old town is not a memory. It is a place to live again.

June 2nd, Manduria. National Day.

While the mayor’s voice echoes through the piazza, rediscovering what it means to belong to this place, the city quietly goes about its own celebration.

In the courtyard of Via Verdi, the carob tree is pushing out new growth, those fierce little copper-orange shoots that appear every June like a small declaration of intent. The tree doesn’t know about holidays. It just knows it’s time.

A swallow perches on the wire above the white arches, still for a moment, the long tail like a calligrapher’s brushstroke against the stone. Then gone.

The tourists have found the shade of the vicoli, lingering over lunch, in no hurry. The locals are at the sea, standing at the water’s edge in the June light, letting the cold Ionian water reach their feet, not quite ready to commit.

The city is quiet today. Not empty. Quiet in the way that old places get quiet when they feel sure of themselves.

Urban nature doesn’t need parks. Sometimes it just needs a courtyard, a carob tree, and a swallow that chose your wire.

Girls ring the doorbell and run away laughing.
Nobody answers. The square goes quiet again. Then you can imagine them giggling from behind the corner.

It is the first time someone has rung this bell in decades.

Cerco un giovane architetto. Oggi, 1° maggio.

Nel centro storico di Manduria stiamo costruendo qualcosa che non esiste ancora in Italia: un club con camere, progettato intorno alla longevità, alla comunità e alla bellezza di un centro storico che merita molto di più di quello che ha avuto.

Il progetto architettonico è stupendo. Gli artigiani sono i migliori che abbia mai visto all’opera. Il cantiere è aperto, vivo e non si ferma.

Manca una figura che trasformi le idee in documenti e stia in cantiere a fianco di una squadra eccezionale. Disegni esecutivi, rilievi, computi metrici. La mattina si legge un muro. Il pomeriggio si lavora al CAD.

Non cerco qualcuno che voglia fare il concorso. Cerco qualcuno che voglia costruire qualcosa di vero, in uno dei centri storici più straordinari del Salento, dentro un progetto che fra tre anni la gente citerà come esempio.

The masserie in the countryside are beautiful but isolated. The coast is crowded in summer and empty in winter. The new builds are everywhere and feel like nowhere. What’s left is the centro storico of a real town. Stone houses, star-vaulted ceilings, courtyards with a carob tree, neighbours who greet you in the morning, a piazza alive at sunset. The catch is that most of these homes have been abandoned for thirty years. Restoring one yourself is not a weekend project.

The first resident of 15dolcevita has arrived. Not in a suitcase. On a truck, with a crane, floating above the rooftops of the old town.
A two-hundred-year-old carob tree, the kind that throws real shade. In Salento they say you don’t plant a carob for yourself. You plant it for whoever comes next. We planted this one for the couples who one July evening will sit under its canopy, with a glass of Primitivo, and wonder how long it has been there.
The answer, long before us, and long after.
