The Florence of the South: A Baroque Beauty in the Heart of Apulia

Lecce, often called the Florence of the South, is a must-see gem in Apulia, known for its stunning Baroque architecture and brilliant white stone buildings. Begin your journey at Porta Rudiae, the city’s oldest gate, adorned with busts of Lecce’s founders and topped with a statue of St. Oronzo. A short walk leads you to Piazza del Duomo, where the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta and its Bell Tower glow beautifully in the sunset. Explore the Convitto Palmieri, home to the Church of San Francesco della Scarpa and the Bernardini Library.

For lunch, savour local dishes like “ciceri e tria” – a comforting mix of pasta, chickpeas, and crispy fried noodles. Spend the afternoon wandering through Lecce’s charming streets and artisan shops filled with traditional crafts in papier-mâché, terracotta, and Lecce stone. Discover hidden churches like Sant’Irene dei Teatini and soak in the city’s rich history and relaxed pace. Lecce offers an unforgettable blend of art, food, and tradition, perfect for a slow and memorable getaway.

Italy on Film: 10 Movies That Let the Country Steal the Scene
by Vista Italia

Let’s be honest.
Most of us fell in love with Italy before we ever set foot here.

Maybe it was a black-and-white Rome at midnight.
A sun-washed Tuscan kitchen.
A quiet Sicilian village where time felt inherited.

Cinema has a way of doing that. Italy doesn’t just appear in films. It interferes. It changes the mood, slows the pace, and makes you wonder if life could feel different somewhere else.

These ten films didn’t just use Italy as a backdrop. They let it lead.

La Dolce Vita made Rome glamorous and restless all at once. Through Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg, the city became a question rather than an answer. Cafés, fountains, late nights. Rome wasn’t showing off. It was asking what all this beauty is for.

Then came Roman Holiday, and suddenly Rome felt personal. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck drifting through piazzas on a Vespa gave us the fantasy of one perfect day. The kind that stays with you long after it’s over.

Sicily told a very different story in The Godfather Part II. Shot in Savoca and Forza d’Agrò, the stone villages and quiet hills didn’t beg for attention. They carried history. Power. Memory. Sicily wasn’t romanticized. It was rooted.

That same island softened in Cinema Paradiso, where the village square, the old cinema, and shared evenings reminded us of an Italy built on community and ritual. Many people watch this film and say the same thing: “My grandparents lived like this.”

Northern Italy whispered instead of shouting in Call Me by Your Name. Lombardy in summer. Slow bikes. Long silences. Walls warmed by the sun. Italy became emotional terrain, not scenery.

Tuscany showed up as a second chance in Under the Tuscan Sun. Diane Lane’s story made people believe a life could be rebuilt with patience, stone walls, and a little courage. It’s no coincidence that so many people began dreaming of Tuscany after this film.

That same landscape carried far more weight in Life Is Beautiful. Roberto Benigni reminded us that Italy’s beauty has always existed alongside pain, resilience, and humanity. The contrast is what makes it unforgettable.

Then there’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Ischia. Positano. Rome. Venice. Sun-drenched, elegant, and quietly dangerous. Italy as seduction. Beauty with consequences.

Rome returned again in The Great Beauty. Modern, lavish, tired, breathtaking. A city that has seen everything and is still standing. Watching this film feels like walking through Rome at night when the tourists are gone.

And finally, romance made its unapologetic case in Letters to Juliet. Verona’s courtyards, Tuscan vineyards, handwritten notes tucked into ancient walls. Italy as the keeper of love stories that never quite end.

If you’ve ever watched one of these films and thought,
“I don’t just want to visit… I want to stay,”
you’re not alone.

At Vista Italia, we meet people every day who first came here through a movie. A feeling. A scene they never forgot. Cinema plants the idea. Italy does the rest.

Which film made you fall in love with Italy?
And if you’ve already been here, did it feel the way you imagined?

Some places live on screen.
Italy invites you inside the story. 🇮🇹📽️
