Hot hot hot 🥵🔥 - beautiful hiking temperatures! With our goal of hiking between all 5 of the historic fishing villages that make up Cinque Terre (plus throw in our challenging hike between Levanto and Monterosso) we set out to hike between Manarola and Corniglia. Since the blue trail between the two has been closed for a number of years due to landslides, we set out early to take the scenic but steep, high-altitude (350 meters) trail that connects the two via the ancient sanctuary town of Volastra. The trail takes you through steep, terraced vineyards which are held up by miles of dry-stone walls—where local farmers historically used a network of tiny single-rail cogs or monorails to haul heavy grape harvests up and down the cliffs. And unlike many remote mountain treks, this scenic route brings you right through areas like Volastra, where you can pause at local bars or tiny cafes to sample regional Sciacchetrà dessert wine and fresh Ligurian focaccia. If you’re not in the best of shape, you can avoid the most brutal uphill stairs from Manarola by taking a local 10-minute shuttle bus from Manarola up to Volastra and then enjoy a mostly downhill and panoramic walk into Corniglia. We had a celebratory lunch and bottle of vino at Trattoria dal Billy after a wonderful day of hiking One more hike to go and we will have done them all!

If you take the coastal walking path that connects the old and new parts of Monterosso al Mare, you will come across the famous “love lock window.” This iconic spot features a metal window grid or grating mounted against a scenic coastal backdrop—overlooking the beautiful turquoise Ligurian sea and Punta Mesco—where visitors from around the world attach padlocks symbolizing their eternal love.

Castello Brown is a historic fortress-turned-villa overlooking the harbor of Portofino, Italy, famous for its stunning gardens, literary ties, and some of the best and most famous views of the town and marina. The oldest parts of the site date back to around 400 AD when it started as a Roman defensive structure. Over the centuries, it evolved from a watchtower into a medieval Genoese castle called Castello di San Giorgio. In 1867, the English consul Montague Yeats-Brown spotted the abandoned fortress from his ship, the Black Tulip. He fell in love with it and purchased the entire property for just 7,000 lire. Today you can tour the small castle for just a few euros and can see a little history as well as enjoy the amazing views – well worth the price of admission!

The ‘travel experts’ will tell you not to eat in the busy, prime tourist spots because you will overpay and the food may not be authentic. But to us, the extra money spent to enjoy Pansoti con salsa di Noci (ravioli in walnut sauce, the iconic traditional pasta dish of the Italian Riviera) dockside, right next to the Portofino harbour, with Italian friends and an absolutely fabulous view, was priceless! ❤️

From the Roman times when it was named Portus Delphini (Port of the Dolphins) because of the huge number of bottlenose and striped dolphins that inhabited its waters, it later became a humble fishing village, then a glamorous, elite celebrity retreat in the 1950s, and finally evolved into a beautiful, world-famous Italian Riviera gem and tourist destination (but still a fishing village) with beautiful pastel-colored buildings along the scenic waterfront. Portofino is spectacular and certainly worth the walk or a ferry ride to visit while exploring and enjoying the Ligurian coast.

For the best views, head up to Castello Brown, a 16th-century fortress situated on a hill overlooking the harbor which has served as a naval defense for the port town since Roman times. Today, the castle features beautiful terraced gardens with amazing views and is open to the public for a small entry fee.

For just a few Euros and around a 30 minute train ride, you can easily get from Levanto to Santa Margherita Ligure. And from beautiful Santa Margherita, getting to world-famous Portofino is quick, simple and scenic. There are three main options, depending on your preferred pace: a 15-minute ferry ride, a 15-minute bus ride, or a scenic 1-hour coastal walk. The most scenic ferry route is via the Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio (Line 1). Boats depart every 4 hours from the Santa Margherita Ligure harbor, take about 15 minutes, and cost around €11 for a one-way ticket. Or you can take Bus 782 from the Santa Margherita Ligure train station, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes and costs roughly €5. But the most enjoyable way is to walk the mostly flat and paved pedestrian path which is around 5 km (3.1 miles) and takes about 60 to 90 minutes. It hugs the stunning Ligurian coastline and passes by the beautiful bay of Paraggi. Definitely don’t try to drive there – many, many cars were stuck in long lines and were being turned around while we enjoyed our leisurely walk along the coast. ❤️

Spectacular view while hiking from Levanto to Monterosso Al Mare! It is an 8 km trail with an elevation gain of 380 to 400 meters (1,250 to 1,312 feet) that takes about 2 - 3 hours. It may be challenging but offers breathtaking, diverse scenery and views. Along the way, there is a secret vantage point - Punta Mesco. From this high point, you can gaze out and see all five of the Cinque Terre villages perfectly in the distance. The hike takes you through several microclimates: As you hike, you will transition from the beautiful Ligurian Sea, to shaded pine and oak forests into arid, sun-drenched stretches of Mediterranean scrubland, and then back to the beautiful Monterosso seafront. Hint – It is easier in one direction: Starting in Levanto means you tackle an old donkey trail up to the top, which is much more forgiving than starting in Monterosso—where the steep beginning is made up of daunting, giant man-made steps.
