Hidden gems of Rome: the bar near the top of Castel Sant'Angelo is a delightful surprise to stumble across. Come here to have a drink and a rest while you enjoy the view of St. Peter's in the afternoon sun. The only slight drawback is that you need a 14 euro ticket to the castle to get in, but it's still worth it.

Hot day in Rome? Try the pool at Grand Hotel Gianicolo, ten minutes walk from Casa del Cinque. For 20 euro (30 in the weekend) you get a sunbed, a towel - and a wonderful break from shopping and sightseeing. After all, you can always get back to that later.

Found yourself a great spot in the reading nook at the terrace at Casa del Cinque (or somewhere else in Rome, for that matter) - and found you forgot to bring a book? Right around the corner, in Via del Moro, you'll find the loveliest little "Almost Corner Bookshop". Doubles as an informal tourist information, in their own words, they'll tell you "...how to get to Viterbo, and whether or not to go to Naples". And yes, they have Elena Ferrante.
