An apple. You never expected that an apple would be the end to a major chapter of your life. You and your business partner had always gotten along superficially, but behind closed doors it was more or less a contest of who could complain more. Though your overall goals were the same, your method of how to get there was completely different. You were a perfectionist who liked everything to be done exactly as you had planned. Your partner, however -- that was a different story.

While taking some product photos in your bright and spacious living room after lunch, neither of you realized that your partner had left a half-eaten apple on the counter directly behind where you were shooting. It wasn't noticeable when you were photographing, but after the billboard and online ads had come out, the apple became more or less the focal point of the shot. This applegate was the straw that broke the camel's back and you knew you couldn't take one more day with your partner.

Conundrum in Shibuya

1 bed 1.5 bath (1LDK), 130.58㎡, 3 months security deposit, no key money

You met each other on that one dating app -- the one with the fly as the logo. What started off with a benign chat quickly turned into dinner plans for the night after. It went much better than expected: you two ate at an izakaya, continued on to two or three bars, then ended up eating a second "dinner" at a nearby ramen shop at 5AM. You two felt a sudden connection and started going out.

Soon after that you were going over to each other's apartments more and more, to the point that you started leaving a bag with your things in it: facial products, contacts, and the like. You thought that this person might be the one and were mentally preparing yourself to ask to live together. That night you went over to your significant other's place and couldn't find your bag in the bathroom. After asking your significant other for it, you received your bag. Or you thought you did.

Upon opening it up you realized it was not the normal things you put in there -- it was someone else's. Since you had met on a dating app and never asked if you were exclusive you had expected that this may happen in some time, but you were still in a dilemma: do you make a scene and potentially end the best relationship you ever had in your life, or suck it up and try to go on like nothing happened?

Movie Premiere in Okusawa

3 bed 1.5 bath (3LDK), 110.25㎡, 2 months security deposit, 1 month key money

When you were a kid you had always been interested in filming movies and wanted to become a director. You would film meaningless shorts starring your friends, which then you would screen in your TV room for everyone to watch. They weren't good by any means but that didn't matter -- you loved the process of making them and working with your friends to create something.

Fast forward 20 years and your life has taken a completely path. You were the head of sales at an insurance company and doing well -- probably better than you would have if you were still a director -- but you felt empty inside. Your spouse bought you a new camera for your birthday, and you knew it was time to make your next masterpiece. None of your friends in Japan were up to the task, so you enlisted the help of your socks. After two months of shooting, you gathered your family and friends in your underground screening room, and before long the opening credits were rolling on your newest picture -- "Socks and the City."

A dilema in Minamiazabu

FOR PURCHASE: 3 bedroom 2 bath (3LDK), 226.35㎡

You stared blankly at your screen for hours, trying to better grasp what had been going on. For the past 2 weeks, your friend had been recommending buying a digital version of a picture of a tortoise wearing a camo jacket and smoking a pipe. You were reluctant at first, not understanding the appeal of buying an intangible copy of an artwork, but after much persuasion, you sent over the 3.562 stonkcoins to buy it. After the transaction was complete, you felt a bit off -- it wasn't the same feeling that you had when you bought your Warhol or any other artwork up until now. What were you going to do with it? How were you going to display it? Who would even care that you owned it?

A few days later, you opened your laptop and saw the news -- other pictures in the NFTortoise series had sold for 80-100 stonkcoins. As you stared at your screen in disbelief, the dead eyes behind the haze of smoke coming from your NFTortoise's pipe were taunting you. Do you sell now or keep waiting?

Laying low in Aoyama

2 bed 1 bath (2LDK) 113.64㎡, 2 months security deposit, 1 month key money

You had always been the discreet type -- whether it be your job, where you hang out, or who you have relationships with, you always felt the need to keep to yourself. It wasn't like anyone ever gossiped about your secrets, but you hated the idea of everyone knowing your stuff.

That wasn't to say you didn't have a social life -- if anything it was quite the opposite. You were the Gatsby of Aoyama; having a party at your high-ceilinged apartment at least once a week. The minimalist design of the interior invited itself to have people over, and politicians, actors, diplomats, models, and artists all called your place home for 3-5 hours a week. You knew everything about them but they knew nothing about you. And that's how you liked it.

Streaming in Otsuka

2 bed 1 bath (2LDK) 67.49㎡, 1 month security deposit, 1 month key money

Your spouse, your parents, your former colleagues -- everyone thought you were insane to go ahead with your plans of becoming a full-time streamer. But in the tight confines of the extra bedroom in your Otsuka apartment, you toiled at it every night until the early hours. Even though the time difference led to it being "working hours" in the countries you were trying to make it in, you were slowly but surely amassing a fanbase. Your spouse and cat watched in awe as you slaved in front of your we**am, but what started with 1 follower became 50, and within a year you had reached 20,000.

Finally, you had gained enough of a following to quit your day job and live out your dream job: a full-time brick-making streamer.

Sunny Days in Akasaka

1 bed 1 bath duplex (1LDK) 75.17㎡, 1 month security deposit, 1 month key money

Driving up to the parking lot at your building, you parked your candy apple red Karmann Ghia in its spot and grabbed your bag and your miniature pinscher, Steve. It was six years since you started your lifestyle brand in Tokyo and things were finally starting to go well. At first no one thought a brand focusing on pet-centered lifestyle items would be successful, but for some reason, the pet market exploded and the rubber dog shoes you designed with Crocs became your path to the higher echelons of society.

What had started with a marketing blast targeting micro influencers had expanded to a sizable and famous fanbase -- everyone from that one rapper with the tattoos on his face to that one actress who was in and out of rehab went crazy for your Clean Canine Crocs.

As you went up the elevator, you could feel Steve's stomach grumbling against your arm. It was dinner time for both of you. Walking down the hallway and into your high-ceilinged apartment, you ordered your Indian supper on your phone and poured Jerry his kibble. He managed to knock more of the food out of the bowl than into his mouth, but he eventually ate the rest.

Gazing out from the kitchen to the view of Akasaka from your floor to ceiling windows, you started thinking of your next big product.

Fear and Loathing in Nakameguro

1 bed 1 bath (1SLDK) 83.80㎡, 3 months security deposit, no key money

You had heard it that night -- the person you sat next to at lunch the other day had, before you met them, come in close contact with someone who had since tested positive.

Up until now, what you had experienced from the pandemic was not the sickness itself, but the endless states of emergency, as well as the constant reporting of case numbers from the news, alerts on your phone, and talk amongst your friends. You were born with weak lungs, but had become numb to the paranoia you had at the beginning of the pandemic.

That all changed within mere seconds after you received that call -- your mind was suddenly thrown straight into a whirlpool of dread, fear, and sadness, and you decided to lock yourself up and cancel all your face-to-face meetings until you could make sure you weren't positive.

You tried to schedule a PCR test, but the soonest one was three days away. As you sat looking out at your lush garden from the floor to ceiling windows in your living room, your pekinese, Julie, could smell your nervousness, and tried to comfort you by snuggling on your lap. With a shaky tear slowly making its way down your face, you booked the test and hoped you avoided the worst outcome.

Stuck in your head in Nakano

2 bed 1.5 bath (2LDK) 77.92㎡, 1 month security deposit, no key money

“She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts…” — You couldn’t get that stupid song out of your head as you prepared for your day. While you were squeezing some orange juice in your island kitchen, Tammy, your Italian greyhound, was trying to get your attention by continually jumping on you — hungry. After feeding her, you looked out at the sunny day from the floor to ceiling windows of your modern apartment, and the rest started coming back to you: “She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers…” The more you remembered it the more you hated yourself for getting that song — why did it have to be that song — stuck in your mind.

You kissed goodbye to your spouse, who was working from home, and the rest of the day was as uneventful as any other: you went to your job at the patent law firm and had lunch at the same food truck as every other Wednesday. But periodically bits and pieces of the song would come back to you. You were too embarrassed to tell anyone else that this was what was tormenting you the entire day, and ended up not being able to complete any meaningful work.

After a miserable Taylor-filled day, you finally headed home, groceries in hand. Cutting some vegetables for a stir-fry, your eyes started tearing up. Your spouse saw this and asked what was wrong. You blamed it on the onions, but in reality it was just the rush of emotions from that song.

You put down the knife, stuffed the chopped-up vegetables in the fridge, hugged your spouse, and the two of you went to a karaoke box near Nakano Station to cry and sing “You Belong With Me” together.

Every time you went to their apartment, you would always have the best night after, which you would experience the most nauseous and painful morning. It always started with a bottle of champagne, followed by another one or two, and then onto the red wine. It didn’t matter if you were eating fish or lamb, it was always red — and none of you could care less.

You loved their apartment and the way they laid out the place with plants and furniture they found on the street. They spoke no Japanese, but after moving in quickly befriended the neighbors. The elderly couple two doors down even gave them a few pet fish which they kept in bowl outside, which of course was also filled with plants.

One day, one of them called you and said they had a big favor to ask — they were leaving to go home for a few months; could you house-sit for when they were gone? You quickly jumped on the opportunity, and once the day came for them to leave, you picked up the keys and said your goodbyes.

After they had left, you went inside to the kitchen, made yourself a cup of tea, and sat down at the dining room table, looking around and smiling ear to ear at the sight of your temporary home. That smile soon shrank into a face of despair as it hit you — you had to actually take care of the plants and fish.

Sunshine After a Long Night in Sendagaya

1 bed 1 bath (1LDK) 57.44㎡, 1 month security deposit, 1 month key money

It was the morning after the first day the city was let go from the grips of the state of emergency. The night before was pure revelry, with everyone you knew taking full advantage of their new freedom. You decided to be good and follow the rules — only ordering drinks until 7PM, but you still wanted to make the most of your night. So you started drinking with your friends at 3:30PM. After all, there wasn’t a law saying what time you could start ordering drinks.

The Amarettos went back one after another, until your breath smelled like toasted almonds. You didn’t remember much from the night before, other than that it was still light out when you stumbled into your spacious living room. You didn’t have it in you to close the blinds on the floor to ceiling windows, and you came to realize that the next morning, when the sun was shining directly on your hungover face. Your pekinese was sympathetic and didn’t wake you up for breakfast (or, more likely, she tried to but you didn’t notice), and when you came to, you realized you were fully n**e, cuddling the poor pup. She didn’t seem to mind though.
