Japan just successfully tested a Mach 5 engine that could fly passengers from Tokyo to Los Angeles in two hours.
A research team from Waseda University and JAXA confirmed last month that their hypersonic ramjet engine ran flawlessly in simulated flight conditions.
The aircraft they're designing would cruise at 25 kilometers altitude — more than double a normal passenger jet — at 5,400 km/h.
That's about six times faster than the plane you flew on last time.
If they bolt on a rocket engine, the same plane could reach space at 100 km altitude.
And because it takes off and lands horizontally, no special runway needed.
The Concorde topped out at Mach 2 and was retired in 2003.
For 23 years, nothing replaced it.
While other countries argue about hypersonic weapons, Japan is quietly building hypersonic passenger travel.
Target for practical use: the 2040s.
Who else thinks Tokyo-to-LA in two hours sounds insane?
