Japan’s tax-free shopping rules are changing 🇯🇵🛍️
Travelling to Japan from 1 November 2026? Save this before you shop.
Under the new system, eligible visitors will:
🛍️ Shop at a participating tax-free store
💴 Pay the tax-inclusive price first
🧾 Keep their passport and purchases accessible
✈️ Complete the tax-free departure procedure before checking luggage
💳 Receive the consumption-tax equivalent back after Customs confirmation
The minimum purchase remains ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day, and purchases must be taken out of Japan within 90 days.
TFS travel tip: allow some extra time at the airport and don’t pack tax-free purchases somewhere you can’t access before completing the procedure.
