If you’ve ever tried shopping for large bed frames in Japan, you know how tricky it can be to find solid, high-quality queen platform beds. Rather than settling for flimsy alternatives, we decided to build ours by hand using local timber and heavy-duty hardware.

Every joist was measured, drilled, and secured with care right inside the lodge. Combined with a rich, dark wood stain, this custom platform bed provides both timeless style and exceptional stability for our guests.

Why I refused to DIY this part of the Atuy renovation in Shiraoi, Hokkaido.

When restoring Atuy, I loved getting hands-on, but plumbing and water lines are far too critical for guest cleanliness, comfort, and safety to leave to an amateur.

This space started as a tiny, awkward room divided into an old boiler room and bathroom with three separate doors. With expert guidance from local renovation professionals at Clever Soken, we removed the walls to open up a single, light-filled powder room.

We added a small window to invite natural sunlight, installed a twin sink vanity with warm mirror lights, and chose rich navy wall tiles that match our kitchen tiles to unify the home’s design. Trusting professionals with essential plumbing infrastructure gave us complete peace of mind.

北海道白老町のAtuy（アトゥイ）リノベーションで、水回りだけをDIYしなかった理由。

DIYが大好きな私ですが、配管や給排水設備はゲストの清潔感、快適さ、安全面に直結する最も重要な部分のため、プロにお任せすると決めていました。

元々はボイラー室と脱衣所、浴室に細かく分かれ、扉が3つもある使いづらい狭い空間でした。地元北海道のリノベーションのプロクレーバー総建さんのアドバイスのもと、壁を取り払い、自然光が入るひとつの明るいパウダールームに生まれ変わりました。

小さな窓から光を取り入れ、温かみのある照明付きツインシンク洗面台を設置。キッチンとお揃いの深みのあるネイビータイルをあしらうことで、家全体のデザインに統一感を持たせています。重要な水回り工事をプロに依頼したことで、安心してゲストをお迎えできる空間が完成しました。

When I hand-plastered the walls at Shiraoi Villa Atuy, my hands were raw, and my first corner was far from perfect. By the time I reached the final wall, I had found my rhythm.

Instead of covering up my early mistakes, I left them. When you stay in this room, you can walk around and spot where I began and where I finished. It’s a physical reminder that different chapters of our growth can peacefully coexist in the exact same space.
