Japanese holiday “Golden week”
ゴールデンウィーク
May 5th is also known as the “Dragon Boat Festival”. Children’s Day and Dragon Boat Festival are often confused because they are the same day, but they are originally different. Children’s Day is a national holiday, and it is a day to wish for the growth and health of children regardless of gender. On the other hand, the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional annual event to celebrate the healthy growth of boys.
After the end of World War II, Children's Day was established on July 20, 1982. This was triggered by a petition in the Diet to make May 5, a day to wish for the healthy growth of boys, as a public holiday as a day to wish for the healthy growth of all children. As a result, May 5th, the Dragon Boat Festival, became Children's Day.
The carp streamer originated from a certain Chinese legend. There is a fast-flowing waterfall called "Ryumon" in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and there is a legend that the fish that climbs there can become dragons.
Many fish tried to climb this waterfall, but only the carp survived. It is said that the successful carp became a dragon and climbed to heaven. As a result, carp banners began to be decorated as a symbol of career advancement.
